I heard that when they went to zinc they had problems with dies because of the metal it flows differently this went on for years also for the plating because now how many good nice looking zinc coins are there. You will notice it seems like they tried different things smaller dates different color platings I just love that deep red one they did. As time goes goes by it is getting harder to find good condition pennies because of ZINKZILLA.
Maybe you just haven't noticed right now I have in my hand a 2005 D the date is smaller than other years the color is a deep gold red not as many in this color for this year not the same as your regular red ones.
