Will a coin with this type of edge damage grade? Or would it be considered as Details by NGC/PCGS/ANACS? I don't know what could have caused this type of damage, and it's the way I received it. I would have guess a staple, but the damage seems a little more severe for that. I do not think that it's damage at the Mint. Also, if I see that type of damage on the fields or devices, then I'd say it would be a gouged damage of some type. But I've noticed often that edge damage gets treated differently. But that'll be Details then, without a number grade by NGC and PCGS, right? I know ANACS does it differently, and I actually like that they assign a number grade.
Correct. Sort of. For circulated coins they do, anything uncirculated that gets a details grade gets MS 60 every single time which I think is rather pointless. There's no difference between just saying everything is MS 60 vs Uncirculated Details. I can see the value of a number grade for AU or VF coins as there's kind of a wide range but 40/45 for a details coin or things like that I don't really think matters
That's true, ANACS will give it a number grade but it will still be in a Details slab. Just so you know, most experienced coin collectors won't buy or even look at a coin that's in a Details slab at all, unless it's rare. If it was my coin, I would count my losses and move onward to the next coin. In short, I wouldn't pay to have a coin placed into a Details slab. better luck next time.
It's a 40mm Korea brass coin, one of the turtle ship theme types I collect. If the same exact damage was seen on a 2019 ASE, then will it grade?
Looks like damage. Either ICG Unc "damaged rim" or the circulated grade (ICG AU-58(?) + "damaged rim."
