Hi, my name's Will, and I'm addicted to ebay. :p I've bought a LOT of coins on ebay and have gotton awesome coins for great deals, and have been ripped off a few times. Can anyone recommend some good coin sellers? Can you tell me who to stay away from? I know of a few good and bad but won't mention who they are so you don't think I'm advertising. :p Thanks!!!

Your best bet to receive helpful answers to this type of question would be to post it in the Main Coin Forum. So I moved it for you ;)

k thanks....I lost over $70 to a guy named "swinvestments". I shoulda known....swindler investments. :p I think he has a few more names that has "sw" in it. But for the most part, ebay usually has some great deals. I browse and look at "going going gone" at 3 am where no one is out bidding me...hehe...Something I do is get on ebay at like, 11pm on New Year's eve.....NO ONE is bidding and I usually save up a few hundred to bid with. lol..anywho, thanks for you post!

    Rolltide,

What kind of coins are you looking for Series-wise and price-wise? Might help in the recommendations.

I'm new to it, so I'm collecting practically everything I can until I find out what to specialize it. I'm mostly just testing the water and seeing what I can get. I'm thinking about Seated Liberty Dollars. I got a very nice 1846 for $90 a few months ago. But my main interests are any seated liberty coins and shield nickels.

the best buys i have seen on ebay are the pcgs and ngc pre 40 lincoln pennies...i have some ms66's(65) that i bought for less than $20...at least that sounds great to me.....i usually pay no more than1/2 to 3/4 of the pcgs coin prices..seems good to me...

since you are interested in V-nickels-the only one i have is a golden toned 1911 ms65, i bought from john dannereuther a few years back..he used to sell here in memphis, but he must have moved on...i'm sure a lot of you recognize his name....

Ahhh. Don't know any sellers personally who deal in those series. If you are looking for Lincolns and other small cents, iras4 is well thought of. He also sells some other series. I also always keep an eye on lrc-tom and he sells a variety of stuff. And also billanddebbie who are somewhat infrequent sellers. And, if you have deep pockets, anaconda.rare.coins who has a lot of stuff to drool over. ;)

Inregards to e-bay, I agree with you rolltide. Let the buyer beware for there is no big brother looking out for you. It's hard to bid on coins at times for one has to wonder if what I see is what I think it is. I too wish for a master list of buyer relax. It could only help e-bay sales for I'm sure the biddings would be more active if word of mouth/type is what you see is what you think it is and then the honest dealers would get more action for we all would know who they are.

Hey, Will. My recommendation for ebay is to find another venue for buying. I've come to the conclusion that ebay is simply too full of thieves. I buy coins for resale and I don't like the phony "auction" setup. You're better off buying from online dealers who send out a monthy price list or who maintain an online catalog and send out a periodic flashlist.

For me, buying coins is risky enough without having to trust amateur sellers who think that a few little dents or a small hole is no big deal in an "old coin". One of them told me that the undescribed damage to the coin I "won" in his auction was simply reasonable wear for a 100 year old coin.

Ebay stinks, IMO. Why buy a coin at a time, taking days to even find out if you "won" it then wait while some seller finally gets around to mailing the coin and pay enough S&H to cover buying dozens of coins from a reputable dealer online?

Interesting responses - it goes both ways. Some folks hate ebay - others love it. I myself fall into the second category.

I purchase coins through all venues - from internet auctions, from live auctions, from coin shops, from internet dealers, from other collectors - if there is somebody that has a coin that I want at a reasonable price - I'll buy it.

But the one thing to remember when buying from any source is that the seller has a return policy. And yes that even goes for buying the coin sight seen - in person. That way if you decide you don't want to keep the coin for whatever reason - you can return it. Kinda hard to go wrong that way.

As for ebay itself - yes it is easy to get ripped off. But it's just as easy to get ripped off while standing right there in a coin dealers shop. It all depends on the seller - and the knowledge of the buyer of course. You see - no one can ever take advantage of you unless you let them. Since you're the buyer and the one with the money - you can always say no and walk away.

The thing with ebay is to know what it is you are buying before you buy it. Of course that's true with any venue - but perhaps more so with ebay. But if you do know what you are buying then it is possible to find some very good bargains on ebay from time to time. The key is your knowledge - you have to be able to recognize a bargain when you see one and also know when to walk away. It's just that simple.

Ebay is like having a huge shopping mall in my home, and it never closes, and great deals can be found.....

Well if you can post pics of the coins we can give you an approximate grade & value. If nothing else the pics would help in determining if the coins warrant certification by a slabbing company. And yes there is a ccompany in Canada that specializes in Canadian coins.

Check the ratings of the people. When I buy I look at the ratings, but more important I look to see repeat buyers. People that like what the got and got good deals will usually go back for repeat business. The more repeat business the better.
