I believe I have a 1987 steel plated penny with no mint mark which came from the Philadelphia mint I believe. It has some magnetic properties within it as it will react to a magnet however it's not a strong pull. I'm unsure of value etc. and I have found zero info of any others like it. Help?

1 cent. Plated cents are considered post mint damage.
Because the coin has been unnaturally doctored and tampered with.
As if someone took a screwdriver to it and scraped it all up.

The reason that the magnetic pull is not strong, is that the plating is thinner than the coin itself, but as said above it is damage.

Almost certainly nickel plated. I don't believe steel plating is possible. Iron plating yes, steel plating no.

Ok. Thank you. I also found a 1941 Nickel with no mint mark yesterday. Any insight on it? I'm new at this obviously..lol

As for the 1941 nickel, even though it's old, this is a very common coin
and has no value about face value (5 cents) unless the condition is
AU or MS. (About uncirculated or mint state. Brand new looking.)
There are some old Jefferson's that have value, but this is not one of them.
A little while ago I took all my worn 1940 and 1941 (Philly) Jefferson's and released them into circulation.

Plated Cents are considered damaged and are only worth face value.

Hello- so in my pocket today I noticed a 1987 penny, about 35 percent steel lookin , the rest being copper n found myself reading these comments to find out more,, seems copper peels, not the other way, which would be the plating i would assume,

Since 1982 our cents have been zinc with a very thin copper outer layer. It isn’t uncommon to find the copper layer partially missing. Spend it quick though. That zinc core will deteriorate pretty quickly.

The thin layer of copper coating is coming off of your cent. Soon it will turn dark and start to rot away. Spend it and welcome to CT.

If it was a partially plated planchet before striking, it is an error coin and valuable. If part of the copper plating was removed after striking it's just damaged.
