Newly received 1955 wheat penny which is cut in half. Nice that this "$0.005 coin" still retains the Lincoln portrait and the year. And I like NGC not using the prongs slab on this coin. This one has a MS64 Brown.
What a cool coin wow! I find it stunning how it still has Lincoln and the date still preserved on it.
NGC would not attribute a Cent that was cut in half. That implies that it was done deliberately. That would not be a Mint Error. It is either a faulty Planchet that cracked and lost a piece or a Straight Clip. Do you have this coin? Can we see the label? That looks like a PCGS Slab and not an NGC slab
Cool coin. Since it’s slabbed, you could clarify what error actually caused this. My bet is a Planchet flaw that caused the coin to crack in two. I dislike the NGC prongs myself. Hides part of the coin. Glad they didn’t do that, or perhaps couldn’t do that here.
Agree. I guess I mislabel the title... Do you know how to rename title? Never tried it before. Thanks!
Ok so now we know what you have. Ragged Clip Planchet. Always show the entire slab so we can have a better idea of what you have.
I forget who pointed it out earlier, but displaying the entire slab may also cue people into how much was paid for the coin. That’s something some people may not want to disclose for a variety of reasons. I’m not certain it is necessary to demand the entire slab shown, but certainly is nice to have all the info.
I saw that thread. I don't think that it is really a big deal. For years I have been showing all of my Mint Error slabs with no problem. So I think it's silly. But to each their own.
@Seattlite86 Here is a good CoinTalk thread on the subject https://www.cointalk.com/threads/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-incomplete-planchet-error.77334/
I think that a 1955 Doubled Die on a Ragged Clip Planchet would be worth even more money! It would be a Major Variety and Mint Error at the same time!
That was a type before thinking moment. Forgive my brain fart. I had it in my head that it split after strike.
