VF-30 I'd say, probably cleaned. Have you checked it for a VAM attribution? www.ashmore.com You might have a good one...

I also say VF dipped. I don't know about vams. It sounds like you believed it might be cleaned but hoped it was not. Always trust what your mind tells you to believe, not what your heart tells you to hope.

My opinion is XF40. Looks like the coin still has some luster and some decent hair detail. Im just curious to what happened to the motto,(possibly grease filled die), it says "IN OD WE TRVST". Im having trouble seeing the "G". Is it the same in hand? I cant believe my ANA Grading Standards book is still in a box somewhere.

I've seen other peace dollars where the G is weak or almost absent, so I presume it is normally weakly struck on many of the coins. It doesn't look like wear.

either the ANA grading book or photograde (I can't remember which one) says that most are like that. That is just from the dies.

I'm thinkin' VF35. Hard to tell without better photos of the reverse.

What makes you say it was cleaned? The pitting in the background. I would have graded this AU but I'm evidently not an expert on Peace dollars.

It looks XF, at a minimum, to me.

Hello Ruben, where do you come up with AU? ;) Perhaps it's simply based upon others opinions in the thread prior to yours.

The Coin: well quite frankly, looks like it has substantial wear and was scrubbed with a Brillo Pad on the obverse, so knowing that there are two sides to every coin (yes, I know the rim is a side too) chances are the reverse is just as rough too even though the pictures are out of focus. Maybe with better pics my take would change but for now this is where I get my VF grade cleaned grade.

Only one person who posted a grade guess before Ruben said AU, while four guesses were lower, so it sure doesn't appear that his grade was based upon other opinions in the thread.

And for the record, I probably think your VF/cleaned grade is as or more off base than you believe his AU grade to be. I don't see "substantial wear", and what apparently looks to you like scrubbing from a Brillo pad could easily be the effects of the lighting and the magnification.

Ah, my recent shadow, can't shake ya :) As to the coin, better pictures will enlighten us all. So until then my VF grade remains. BTW, that one person who voted AU first, well I think Peter said once they count X5... ;)

    Adios

It is difficult to guess a grade with those photos, especially the out-of-focus reverse photos. The obverse seems to be a problem, especially with the area where the "G" is supposed to be, and there appears to be considerable wear in the hair. For comparison, here are the obverse and reverse of a 1928 Peace dollar that was graded Cleaned/ AU details by NCS:

At first glance I was going to say au, but there are too many rubs around the neck line and the lower hair around the face. The detail is alomst there IMO to be Au, but the open fields are ugly. Over all I'll say xf-45 it still has luster, how ever I thing it probably has been dipped, but would like to see in hand cuz I could be wrong.

VF just too much wear and scratches to go any higher imo

Below is a Peace Dollar that ANACS graded VF 20 cleaned - it is considerably more worn than the one in this thread.
