The bottom photo appears to be the SMS. You can Look at the edge of the rim , if at sharp right angle it is a proof, if rounded it is the SMS . Jim
I always thought the SMS had sharp square edges..... Either way, you are right about the bottom being the SMS.
Upon careful and considered observation, I deem the top photog to be the 'proof' coin........but ya never know. I've only had one drink.
If I were to take it out of cover, you wouldn't be able to tell... The plastic cover makes the details a bit more glossy and throws off how the edges are perceived.... Even with one drink, you still got it though!
I think you actually can't tell from a single photo, especially since no official SMS coins were released to the public in 1964, only in 1965-67. Some unofficial coins yes. But most are well documented. But if the question is one of these is definately an SMS which one is it? Then definately the bottom coin. I think you are trying to infer that the top coin (which ia likely yours because it is in a 2 x 2 and a true SMS would be slabbed) looks like an SMS so could it be one? And the answer to that question is no it is not an 1964 SMS coin.
I know it's not an SMS, if it were, I wouldn't have put it up as a proof. I did include it because it looks very close to one, that was the whole premise of the thread.. To Foster convo and just for the fun of it...
Cool. Just that some folks come on here and insist that their proof 64 looks exactly like an SMS and so think it is and refuse to believe the folks that know way more than I do that tell them sorry you do not have a 64 SMS.
The pic of the SMS is from the PCGS website, I am not the owner. I am the owner of the proof but am well aware that it is not an SMS...... The idea wasn't to get people to say my coin is an SMS, that would be pointless.. Thank you for commenting though, love to hear everyones opinion.
I hear you and understand completely. For me, it would be pointless to convince anyone the proof is an SMS unless you are PCGS...
