Undeniably one of my favorite coin designs ever. Just got this one for 1$ over spot! :)

Stunning example! Please post your favorite world coin designs.

Pretty hard to argue with Roty's Sower. Here's another French design, The Uruguay Centennial of 1930, by Morlon.

I love the obverse on this one. Writing in the book of law.

Boy ! I don't even where to start with French designs I like. But if I did start, I think I'd start with this one from 1364. I'm certain all the members that have been here for a while have seen it numerous times, but the newer members haven't. Hmmm, sounds like a valid excuse to post it again to me :)

The first French franc, the Franc a' Cheval - a coin with several books worth of history behind it, including it's very reason for being designed and minted - to pay the ransom for a King captured in battle by his nemesis, The Black Prince. And how that King voluntarily gave up his life and died in prison, purely to save his honor.

This example was minted by the Count Louis de Male in FLanders, 1364. When I purchased it, it was the finest known, it may still be, or not. But that doesn't really matter, nor did it when I bought it. I bought the coin because I absolutely loved the design ! I mean it's kinda hard to get any better than a King in armor on a horse, sword raised, charging into battle ! Things like that have stirred my blood since I was a young boy - they still do ;)

Could I post more ? I could fill this thread, and maybe I'll add some more in a bit. But for now, I'll let others share theirs first.

I like the cat. Canada had one similar.

La Semeuse: the Sower. Known earlier, she was the model for Weinman's Walking Liberty Half. (The classic heads from France were copied by Barber.)

It would take a close analysis to explain why this is far superior to the Barber knock-offs. It is not just the strike or grade, but the entire design, the vocabulary of line and space that reveals Barbers (pere et fil) to have been second-handers, mere copyists. When the US Mint opened up design opportunities with the ill-conceived and badly managed "Commemoratives" of the 1920s and 1930s, the artistry improved.

For me it's hard to beat classical Greek gold staters for the title of most beautiful world coins ever. Here's just two different types so you can see what they are all about. I wish I could afford them. :wideyed::greedy:

Keep in mind these were all hand-made 2400 years ago.

(Not mine. I put together a coin club presentation for another member. I think that this was not his, either, but an example. You can see that it is in a slab.) Be that as it may, this was the original "Sower" that inspired the Original Post (and the US Walking Liberty Half Dollar.)

One of my favorites (along with all those French coins) is the Japanese 50 sen 'double hoo' bird. I have entirely too many of them. They come in blast white to fabulous colors so there's always an excuse to add another one. This is a favorite of my favorites--love the way the sunburst design is red. Lots of Japanese classic symbols too. I've posted it many times but just can't help putting it out here again.

I can relate to that as well :) And while this may be somewhat disqualified since it was an essai and not a design chosen for actual use, I bought it specifically for the design - of the pretty girl of course ;)

And guys, we could go way off on tangents here posting coins from all over the world. But let's try and stay on the topic of the thread here and stick to France :)
