I found 2 2006 P Jefferson's with identical die chips or some other type of defect on the reverse left end of Monticello. Photos below. 2006 P Jeff Die Chip REV #1.jpg 2006 P Jeff Die Chip #1.jpg 2006 P Jeff Die Chip REV #2.jpg 2006 P Jeff Die Chip #2.jpg

Following are 3 specimens that show what appears to be the same characteristic in a minor state. 2006 P Jeff Die Chip #1 Starter.jpg 2006 P Jeff Die Chip #2 Starter.jpg 2006 P Jeff Die Chip #3 Starter.jpg

I think it's a die chip. Very nice that you have 3 leading up to it. It shows that it's growing in size. Since you have 2, I think you should share. Lol

I'm going through that roll again. I saw some of what I thought were just anomalies that may be even further down the development chain.
BTW, these are all from the same Mint Roll ordered direct from the mint in 2006. Makes me think they are related.

    Is that a 2018 P or D?

Meow has found that P mints have about ten times more die chip/die cracks/ doubled dies than D mint ones of any denomination.

I searched the entire mint roll. Everyone of the coins has the same die chip in varying degrees. @MeowtheKitty @Heavymetal @Collecting Nut and all others interested, what to do next with these?

It's always cool to find a die chip (internal die break) progression like that. You're correct, they came from the same die. As the coins were minted, the chip kept getting worse and all of the coins from that ended up in a large hopper. Your roll came from there.

What's the next step? I think it would be cool to put them in 2x2's showing the progression of the break. Are they worth anything? Probably not much extra, but it is definitely a keeper IMO

I agree that they are not worth much more than 5 cents. And, I think I will put them in 2X2's and try to put them in progression. The 2X2's will make them worth 7 cents each. I keep all the stuff I find like this.

You could always label them with die stages A,B, C, like the big boys, I think you might get 4 or 5$ for a set if you label them right. Put them in a plastic holder and a snazzy name such as " 5Cent explosion of Montecello's wall in 3 stages" on ETSY and now they are really up there :) IMO, Jim

Great idea. And I always thought the Miracle Ear Salesmen were the best. You know, they can take something you can't see and sell it to someone who can't hear. I'll start sorting and post some findings. It will be a job to go through 40 coins. Will appreciate more feedback.

Meow thinks it would really not be all that much. Meow would just add them to the Cat hoard and be happy. Meow would also put at least one of the best example/highest grade ones in nice holder and label it.
For example the best die chip Meow ever found was the Jefferson booger variety(Meow's name for it) Mt Rushmore quarter. It also has a very minor Doubled Die at the nose. It just makes Meow happy to have it.

That is fantastic! I would separate them and try to build sets that show the progression of the Die breaking down as it was used. Not sure how many you can build or if you want to sell or give to the grandkids.

As with Die cracks the value is low but I would think that a set showing the break down would add a few extra dollars. Put them in nice 2 x 2's to protect and watch those staples.

What a nice find! I'd be excited!

Yes, the staples must be crushed. Thanks for the feedback.

I have photographed all the roll and put them in numbered 2X2's. For some reason I only have 39. I think I put one in a set. But, the 39 are all from the same roll. I will post 4 or 5 in another post to show some of the progression. I need to sort some first.

I picked out 5 that I think show the progression. I will need to be more precise, but this will be somewhat representative. 2006 Jeff Die Break #8.jpg 2006 Jeff Die Break #17.jpg 2006 Jeff Die Break #29.jpg 2006 Jeff Die Break #25.jpg 2006 Jeff Die Break #5.jpg
