On eBay I have noticed that PCGS certifications are selling for a little higher price than are the NGC certified coins. Does it really make a difference which coin is purchased? Aren't both companies almost equal among coin collectors? Thank you, Jim
Hi Jim, I can't think of any reason why I would need a third party grading service to certify a common bullion coin. First of all, I have never heard of these being counterfeited, so authentication is not an issue. And as far as the grade goes, almost all Silver Eagles are at least MS-67 when they leave the mint. So I just can't see any reason to pay someone to tell me my bullion coin is an MS-69 instead of an MS-67, when I probably can't tell the difference anyway. Guess my ego isn't big enough. JMHO
Jim - You are pretty much correct in your statements. As long as the coin is pleasing to you and the grade meets your standards - it matters little which company slabbed it. The one time it may matter is if you plan to sell the coin in the future. For whatever their reasons are - many collectors will pay more for a PCGS slabbed coin. Whether that remains to be true in the future is anybody's guess.
Both comments are correct. Pcgs does currently hold a small margin over NGC. This can change at any time. Now while the Silver Eagles are technically bullion, they trade frequently as collector coins. It is also true that any coin less than 68 in MS or PR is really a bad strike. I do not know of any dealer that will consider grades of 65 through 69 to be of anything special. Yes we sell them at what the market will bear, but in all honesty, only a 70 will get the attention of most dealers. So if you are interested in buying Eagles, do so for their beauty. Don't pay an extra amount because of anyones piece of plastic.
NGC vs PCGS Certified I agree with all the previous statements. I've seen PCGS coins sold at a premium over NGC, but the questions still stands- Of the two services, are their grading of a coin comparable, or is one certification better than the other? If so- why?
Howdy EagleJunkie - Welcome to the Forum !! The question you ask has been discussed many, many times. Rather than rehash it all here again I suggest you do a search on the subject.
