Does anybody else see the D mintmark?

    Nope. That's an "S".

Thanks to everyone that didn’t needlessly post a NO I don’t see the D.
Seriously now, does anybody see the D?
It’s as plain as day to me, even in this photo. 70 views and not one of you can see the D.

    Perhaps because it isn't there?

If you can point out where you see it, that may help. I can see what appears to be a stain just above the S that may look like a D, but it's too small to be a mm. There are no listed OMM for a 1969.

Thanks for your honest reply, at least you see the letter and I assure you, it is not a stain.
As far as books are concerned, don’t believe everything you read. Some errors took many years to be discovered. I’m letting my eyes do the looking without regard to any books. Just because it’s not listed, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. IMO
As far as the size of the letter D, I have no idea how to compare that faint D with an S mintmark in good shape. They might have used multiple mintmarks for both letters.

OK I enlarged and put a grid over it, so which box is the 'D"? ABCD COL X 1234 DOWN

Every once in a long while -- every few years -- a new error, one that isn't in the books, gets discovered.

People who just let their "eyes do the looking" spot new "errors" in random staining patterns Every. Doggone. Day. And plenty of them get posted here.

    Pareidolia

In related news, don't spend too much time staring at your toast, either. Someone might be looking back at you. :angelic:

Chaga, I think you may be seeing the "D" in the D4 box right on the edge of the line, and if it is, none of D mintmarks had that shape , and it should be the same font and similar size to the S. I see no damage that might have distorted it, so I would have to agree with pareidolia, which is very common in humans. If it was a different area, let me know. Jim

The Grid thing is messing me up, columns vs rows. So if I’m correct it is in column 3 row 3. Literally attached to the upper part of the S mintmark and passing through the upper part of the S.
Either you see it or ya don’t I guess.

@jeffb: I think you should try harder, you may be overlooking legitimate errors. Stare at my photo some more, once you see the D there is no doubt as to what I am seeing.

Yes, I can see what you see. I can also see an "S" or an "8" above and to the right of the S mint mark, a tilted 1 pointing away from the S in the grid to its left, and... a lamb's or a lion cub's face, tucked into the hook of the 6, and looking out at us.

All of them are equally real -- they're all patterns in the wear, dirt, or scratches on the coin's surface. None of them represent "mint errors", and none of them are significant.

Chaga , we aren't tryng to fun you, but some interprets what they see differently. If the brain wants to see something badly , it will. We hope that people don't send every coin off to be graded at $50 or so, they will not have as much fun afterwards. In fact, if you read some of the threads people then blame the grading company for exchanging their coin or something similar. If yours was what you think it is, we would be very happy for you, but speaking just as one, it isn't. Jim
