People are spending their saved coins

I'm sure that most people throw their loose change in jars. Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed some interesting coins in my change. I've noticed a growing number of copper pennies and even a couple wheaties. I've also found a 1941 nickel and a 1964 quarter.

I suppose the economy is really putting a pinch on folks and they are spending their reserves.

Keep an eye on your change.

Do you really think that people are spending their reserves at this point? I occassionally find silver dimes and quarters, wheaties and 40's nickels. When I start finding them with regularity, then I'll beleive that people have tapped into reserves

Do people really have such reserves? I'm 100% electronic transactions, only getting cash or change rarely, and ridding myself of such whenever possible. There must be more and more people like me every day..

I'm sure that there are many who are using electronic transactions but I usually still pay cash whenever possible. I got burned last year using my check card and it took a while to get is straightened out.

I like that Visa Check Card commercial where everything is going smoothly as people use their check cards and then things grind to a halt when someone uses cash. I've found the opposite in real life. I was behind a guy in a local convenience store yesterday who paid with his check card and we had to wait for his receipt to print. I paid cash and the transaction was less that 10 seconds. I'm sure that there are many who see things differently.

I was watching "Are you smarter than a 5th grader" the other night and one of the 1st grade math questions was "How many pennies are there in one dollar". The guy hesitated and said, "I didn't know people still used pennies". I thought this was extremely interesting.

I do know that a co-worker took 100 rolls of quarters to the bank just last Thur. to cash in. He keeps every quarter he receives in change searching only for statehood quarters to put in a coin map he purchased years back. Anything else he could care less about.

I believe that this is the case in my area. I've never seen so many copper pennies in change before.

Same here. My last debit card got lost in the mail and it took over a month to get a new one issued and in my hand.

I use both, cash and debit. I have had too many problems with debit cards (restaurants, ATM's, etc.) to rely on them 100%. Nothing makes you more irritated when they say your debit card was rejected when you know that there is $$$$ in your checking account.

I used to rely on my debit card exclusively. I never carried cash. However, two issues changed that.

    1. Last year a merchant double charged my debit card and it took over month to resolve.

    2. The real lesson came one weekend when I went to an ATM to deposit my paycheck. I put my ATM card in the ATM machine and the ATM powered off and didn't come back up. The phone next to the ATM just rang with no answer. I couldn't get my card back until the following Monday. I usually don't carry credit cards with me so I was stuck. I'm sure that this was a remote issue that probably wouldn't repeat, but it did put me in a spot.

    Brian
