Not sure what to make of the obverse of this dime at 9 o'clock. I do not really know if it is an extra letter, but I have no idea what caused this. The mark is raised with no indentation at the same spot on the reverse to account for it. I think the large scratch/gouge on the reverse is PMD, but I am puzzled at the extra 'letter' on the obverse. Any thoughts or explanations? Thank you.
Toothpick did nothing to help remove anything at 9 o'clock. I have acetone, but I'm hesitant to use it unless absolutely necessary. I guess I just want to rule out that it is nothing special before using acetone. I took a few more pics of the obverse in different lighting and orientations to help provide more detail if that helps. It looks like a possible die crack near the spot I'm referring to. Could this be some type of cud? Feel free to correct anything I have said since I am a novice collector at best. Thanks.
Given the overall poor condition of the coin, particularly with the gouge on the reverse, acetone will not harm it. Trust me! Chris
Fair enough, but the mark appears to be raised looking through a 7x loupe. Soaking in acetone now. Will post another pic afterwards so we can all see the difference. Thanks for the feedback and I will move on to the next coin!
