Last year I had all my modern commemoratives slabed by ANACS. Now they are all toned a brown color around the edges. Is this common?
How are you storing the slabs? My understanding is that slabs are not air tight so they have to be protected from humidity and chemical fumes.
They are in plastic anacs boxes. There is no problem with smoking, humidity or chemical fumes. Everything is normal.
When you say ALL your commems - how many are you talking about. I have been wanting to do this, but I am afraid of the cost!!!
If you want toning, do nothing. If you do NOT want toning, air-tites or as has been suggested and I'm thinking it works really well is to put your albums/coins in ziplock storage bag.
OK, and where exactly do you keep these boxes ? I mean if you just store them in one of the rooms of your home then the coins are going to tone. Coins, that includes those in holders or slabs, must be stored in closed containers in a cool dry area where the temperature does not change. And that closed container there must be desicants, silica gel packs, to absorb any humidity in the air. And these silica gel packs must be changed or re-charged on a regular basis - which can vary greatly based on where you live. If you don't do all of these things - the coins will tone.
Suy silica before the silica rush. This is all true. I have 2 small safes with desiccant packs in each. The one I open more frequently I have to dehumidify the Silica pack more often. In 1 year I have dehumidified the pack 2x, while in the safe that has been opened once, the Silica is still doing its' job. These Silica packs come in various sizes and make great gifts for your coin collecting friends & relatives. (No, I don't sell these!)
Same thing happened to me with a single ASE. Started developing a purple tone around the rim. That's when I put them in Intercept Shields with silica gel. All good now.
