I dont know if i agree with it having to be slabbed.,,But that would help remove question of if its fake or not. I would only chance it if the seller had other gold coin listed now and had sold other gold coins before. Thats why checking feedback is so importent. You could always ask him for size and weight of the coin.

I personally would buy a slabbed coin as well at this point. It eliminates a lot of the guess work.

The graffiti (scratches) at least show the coin isn't gold plated, like the one I posted. That's a good sign, plus the 2nd coin isn't an 1868 and that's another good sign. The one thing I don't like is the holders. It's hard to see damage from being an ex-jewelry piece with them being in the holders. I'd like to see better pictures with them out of their holders.

I'd have to agree the pics aren't good enough to tell if they are fakes and the weight is extremely important, so I'd ask for that and new pics before I bid.

With all of the fake slabs running around now, I don't trust anything slabbed unless it comes directly from the grading company!

With that said ,it should be mentioned that MOST ex-jewelry coins dont get slabbed, At least not by PCGS and NGC and i beleive ICG will not slab them either im not 100% sure but i think if ANACS does they MARK it as such. the only TPGS that slabs them that i know of thats lagit is NCS. Every other TPGS I cant say much about. As I dont even look at.

Well, it may get to the point where even the "knowlegable honest seller", will be fooled. I personally think that counterfeit slabs are much scarier than the raw coins. The reason being that if one questions the authenticity of a slabbed coin, he wouldn't be able to break the slab open and examine the coin in hand if he hadn't already purchased the coin. So it is impossible to truly examine the coin by touch, examining rims, ring test etc.... before purchasing IMHO. Also more difficult to weigh, unless they knew the exact weight of the slab, which I assume differs slightly with slabs of different sized coins.

He may be fooled, but would likely stand behind the coin. I suspect Mark, for instance, would protect me from such an eventuality, and that's part of the reason I purchase virtually all of my expensive (to me) coins from him and dealers like him...Mike

    Can they tell the difference?

Some can, particularly if they used to do it for the grading companies. ;)

But really, it's less about the skill of the dealer and more about what they'd do in the event the coin was indeed counterfeit. To wit...

Mark, how would you handle a situation, say, five years after you sold a coin that it was shown to be counterfeit?

I own one counterfeit 2 1/2 Dollar gold coin I forget what year and its from a EBAY seller about 5 years ago. The seller I bought it from wouldnt even reply to my messages. ( I wrote them more then 5 times about it and got no reply . ) The down side is I didnt notice the coin was a fake until a year after I bought it. "It was that good of a fake". That even I couldnt tell it was. I should have tested it sooner, but the day I got it in the mail was the same day one of my boys went off to Iraq and it slipped my mind complealty to check it. As it looked that good. So I tucked it away in one of my safes and forgot all about it as my mind was on other things, like my boys well being. Then about a year later when I was just looking through some of my collection I find it and remember to go ahead and test the coin weighing it and sizing it up. First I took out my caliper to it, YUP to thin. Then weight, Yup to light. Everything else was perfact. The guy that counterfeited it was a or is a pro for sure. I brought it to my dealer friend. He said looks good to him then did the same things I did and he know a lot more about coins then me. But he said He is not 100% sure its fake still. SO he says to me.Lets make a bet. He will send it to PCGS to be graded and slabbed, and if it comes back in a body bag, he will eat the cost of sending it to them. If it comes back in a slab, I pay for the cost's and owe him lunch. ( This is a guy I have been going to for 30 plus years and is a fishing buddy of mine to boot. ) SO I say fine, your on. Sounds like a good deal to me. Well Sure enough it come's back in a body bag. lol I still bought him lunch that day.

Now thats how good of a fake it was,It fooled me. It fooled a guy that is a 2nd gen/ coin collector and dealer. I Have to say I am glad I found out before my boys get my collection. "When I drop dead" Of course :). Im not glad that I forgot to check it out when I got it in the first place. I dont know if the seller I bought it from thought screw you its been a year. Or if they knew it was a fake when the sold it. Im leaning towards the fact that they knew it and thought think there in the clear. Its now going on 6 years that I have owned this coin sitting in its body bag in a box at my bank with some other AUTHENTIC coins and I dont know what to do with it. The only thing i do know is its fake and that and another bad run in on ebay were the reasons I didnt use ebay for about 4 years.

I just thoght Id share that story, As it seemed slightly relivent to this topic.

Mike, if I sold a coin which was later determined to be counterfeit, I would refund* my client's money. And frankly, I believe that any other seller would have an ethical duty to do the same.

*The not-so-easy part for me would be to figure out whether to issue a refund of the original purchase price or pay the client more or less than that, based upon prices/values at the time it's learned that the coin is counterfeit.

I've been in business since 1979, and fortunately, have not had that situation come up.

If you still know who you bought it from you should return it. A dealer's guarantee on authenticity is forever.

You have any advise as to how I should handle it though Its been a very long time.

Just be polite when yo utake it back. Explain your story just like you did here. Take the coin in the body bag - explain why you waited, and ask for a refund because the coin is a fake.

Is this dealer by any chance an ANA member ? If he is, and refuses the refund - then report him to the ANA and they will deal with it.

Well I finaly found the info on the transaction. I wrote the seller a nice long email again with all the tranaction info in it and tried to explain as nicly as a I could the story. Now I will see if they write me back this time. I think if I don't hear anything back from them this time within a week. I will just send them a EMAIL every day forever. lol. The ironic thing now is I bet the gold content of the coins is worth what I paid for it. After all these years. Now my question is. Is there anythign I can do after years?

GDJMSP in reply to if there a ANA member, I don't beleive so. I think there just one of those people that just sells anything on ebay.
