1971-S Kennedy Half Dollar, is it really the FS-102?

Won an auction on Great Collections a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised when the coin showed up in my mailbox.

The half dollar is in a PCGS holder, graded PR69 and attributed DDO FS-102. The only thing is the doubling doesn’t match up to the 1971-S CONECA DDO-006 which is cross referenced to the FS-102.

I will not mention which die this coin is, I will let people try to identify the variety.

Rick, Ike and Atrox are the guys here for DDO's.
Nice buy Tim. Can't tell which variety, but a nice DDO.

Yea, you can really see it in the bottom of the W, and in the Ts. Congrats on your find.

Let my first say...Tim outstanding photos and a very fun post. Someone should be able to attribute this half using the CONECA Master Listings, http://varietyvista.com/Variety Master Listings/kennedy doubled dies 1971-1994.htm#_1971-S. James Wiles Kennedy E-Book would help when he completes it, still in progress. Rick is on the right track the obverse design will rule out a lot of dies, ODV-002 (weak R) or ODV-003 (strong R). Then look at the strength of doubling, you should be able to identify the die after that. I will let Tim post the die number.

Rick, if it helps the coin in question has the ODV-002.

I don’t want to say which CONECA variety it is, it is my hope that some of the Kennedy collectors will be able to determine which one on their own. I think I added enough photos so that it can be narrowed down.

The second point of this thread, don’t believe necessarily what is on the label, grading companies do make mistakes and sometimes you find a sheep in wolf’s clothing but other times you can find a diamond in the ruff.

I believe the correct die of the coin pictured above is a lot harder to find then the DDO-006 or FS-102.
