Good evening guys. I am Erhan and new to this site but I have been collecting coins specially Persian dynasties for some time . Today I got lucky to acquire few coins that were previously owned and decommissioned from BM . The original owner acquired these in 1970s and then was sold to a major dealer in U.S where I acquired them from. Now these are not the best in type but the good provenance and reasonable price was the main factor for me to get these. For those interested I got these 4 coins for 500$ a true bargain to have! Some nice rarities. It's a shame about the problems, but I think you got a solid deal. None have any really important details obscured. These early issues are some of my all-time favorite ancient coin designs. I had a fairly extensive Sassanian collection, now trimmed back to just a few of my favorites Those two set me back about $400 so I think you got a good deal, provided you aren't bothered by the holes
That most certainly is the question. Without the holes, they would be worth much more. With the holes, many collectors would not touch them so the prices would fall. It is a matter of opinion. The Varhran II is missing a lot of flan but very little detail of any importance. I believe it is worth more than the other three combined but that, too is opinion. I am glad you are happy with them.
@Ryro Thanks Bud for warm welcome! Hope we can "cointeract" more Doug and Finn you both are correct. The fact that the hole is not affecting the bust and the legend and details is good for me. I don't mind the hole in this situation. Doug you are absolutely right that these coins are rare and if no hole, I would have to pay a premium for them but having the hole, I think I paid a good price for them. Specially I like the Ardashir with Parthian Tiara which was missing in my collection.
Very nice coins.. I am glad you are happy with the purchase... they are very interesting - thank you for posting. I have no Sasanian coins at all - but I certainly have a desire to one day to own a Sharpur I. The capture of Valerian is a moment in history that is very intriguing to me. His coins are expensive (to me.. much less than one of the coins you own...) but hopefully I will stumble upon a modest example at some point. Cheers!
Welcome. This Khusrow II is the only Sasanian coin I have owned so far. Probably will not be the last, however.
@Clavdivs Thanks. I am happy you liked them. By the way guys, I checked some Sasanian coins in BM and it seems their look and feel and patina is very consistent with the coins I got.
