Maybe its just me, but this coin doesn't look right. I was comparing to the one I have, and the details in the pic look really grainy to me.....and kind of washed out. Maybe its just the photography, or maybe I'm paranoid because I've been had recently.....but anyways. opinions? thanks. http://cgi.ebay.com/1868-INDIAN-PRI...yZ149937QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I Feel the coin does indeed look a little odd. I can't say I would bid on it. Unless I was ready gamble the amount it costs to win it.
The rim doesn't look right... it makes the coin look fat and buldging for lack of a better term (lol). Every coin like this I've seen tends to be "flatter", but then again, most I've seen had more wear.
Since it's a $300-400 coin why would anyone even consider buying it unless: - it's slabbed, or - you can see it in hand.
I know why it looks odd. The reverse picture was taken from a opposite angle and then the pic was turned 180 degrees. Usually we will see a more direct angle or the top of the coin will be furtherest away from the photographer. Another thing is the color, it's too red. The ones I've looked at are very yellow but this one has a red hue to it. It may be lighting that caused it or something else? I just messaged the seller and ask them to weigh the coin and post it on the listing. Let's se eif they do that? For right now, I'm going to hold off on calling it a fake until I find out how much it weighs plus I want to look at it more inepth to see if I can find something that pinpoints it's a fake or not. that was the other thing I forgot to say, it doesn't have that normal gold glare to it. It's very dull. Which gives me reservations on buying but I still want to hold out on calling it a fake. Ribbit
Well, the auction's over now, but especially on the second picture (the one that looks lighter), it sure looks like the surface is a bit too rough.
This one looks bad. Probably counterfeit; hard to say from crummy pictures. Why would anyone pay big money for a raw coin off of E-bay ?
p.s. the point being, I've not seen one. Apparently someone has though: http://lakdiva.org/coins/notes/iapn_ibscc.html Look for "USA 1 gold dollar 1862"
Leadfoot and others, I do not personally have a counterfeit gold dollar. However, I have the book entitled United States Gold Counterfeit Detection Guide by Bill Fivaz. In it, he states that the 1868 is the most common date of counterfeit gold dollars. He shows many pictures on pages 35 and 36 of the book. One of the keys are mushy/weak/fatty details, which I feel this coin has. The surface of the coin in question looks just like some of the coins in the pictures in the book. I can't pick out some of the other diagnostic features, but I believe it's because the pictures in the auction don't show enough detail. Other diagnostics include spikes around the rims and certain die breaks. More investigation would really be needed (seeing the coin in hand) to make a more positive diagnosis.
I do, or rather my son does. I gave it to him so he could keep it and learn from it for later years. Guess I need to get some pics to share. Looking at the coin in question, I'd have to say it looks like a cast counterfeit to me.
thanks guys! yeah, the $1 and $3 are some of my favorites, and I had a funny feeling about that one. I want to make sure that I purchase a REAL one, so I may ask for forum input to help hone my skills(as I recently purchased a fake $3 gold). Here are several that I am unsure of. The bid price is really low right now, though they look like decent coins(maybe cleaned?)....but I'd like some opinions; as they are both highly counterfeited. Both from the same person. http://cgi.ebay.com/1855-Princess-3...ryZ39468QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/1854-1-Gold-Coi...yZ149937QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I wouldn't touch either one of them based on those pics. The second one even looks like it has graffiti on the reverse.
