Hello all...I recently had two coins graded and one came back EF 45 but it also said the coin had been cleaned. I want to sell on Ebay, but do I sell in the holder that says cleaned or break it out and sell it raw?

Would it even make a difference to most buyers?

    What would you do?

If you break it out to sell it raw, with you new found knowledge, you must mention that it has been cleaned. Anything less would be deception. That being the case, leave it in the holder.

The header says "Moral Dilemma", Morally there should be no dilemma. If you know something about the coin that effects the value of the coin and you hide this from the buyer you are not being honest. You might not get as much for the coin buy being up front with potential bidders but you will bet a reputation as being an honest seller and that is worth a lot in todays market.

    Just my opinion

Let your conscience be your guide. If you are the kind of person who believes in "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" then you will describe the coin accurately.

If you are a member of the ANA then you will need to abide by their Code of Ethics which state:

As a member of the American Numismatic Association, I agree to comply with the following standards of conduct:

To base all of my dealings on the highest plane of justice, fairness and morality, and to refrain from making false statements as to the condition of a coin or as to any other matter.

    Well,

Why did you have it slabbed? To see what the grade was or to make money?

You will receive the same answer here a lot methinks. Answer is simple. Sell it in the slab.

You KNOW it's cleaned. Whether or not you knew this when you bought it you do now. Do you go out of your way to buy coins that are even possibly misrepresnted? Therein lies your answer.

Sell it in the slab honestly. You'll get more respect in the long run.

just think ... you know its cleaned .. we all know its cleaned.. selling it broken out of the slab without mentioning its been cleaned.. just 'might' get the auction listed in out bad sellers thread :D

IMHO i would mention it has beencleaned. It just the right thing to do.

if you not part of the solution, your part of the problem.

    good luck

The coin must have looked pretty good for you to have sent it to be slabbed, or at least the cleaning must not have been very obvious. Just sell it in the slab with a comment such as "cleaned but looks good" or something like that. You may be surprised at how much you get for it anyway because some people are more comfortable with slabbed coins than unslabbed regardless of an old cleaning.

    Can you post a photo?

Be honest to yourself and others...leave it in the slab.

I am really confused here. I don't see a dilemma. ALWAYS, ALWAYS disclose what you know about a coin.

I've got to go along with that. You should really do OK with a coin that looked good enough for it to be slabbed. Could say "cleaned but not apparent"

Yes, I think people are much more apt to bid it up even higher when the coin is described accurately and honestly. You'll do much better with it that way than if you try to sell it without describing the issues and people think it looks fishy.

If I ended up buying this raw and then determined it was cleaned, etc. you would quickly get a negative from me and labeled as a bad/deceptive seller which would do you way more harm than the few dollars more you would have received in this auction.

Leave it in the holder. Then at least your not being shady. Set a reserve and leave it at that. Why take the chance of making thins worse. I mean if you sell it knowing its cleaned and not mentioning it. You stand a chance of getting some Negitive Feedback as a seller. Thats never a good thing. Infact it could cost you a lot of future buyers. Neg feedback as a buyer and a seller are two very different things.

Well first off, where was it slabbed and do you think the coin had been cleaned?

It was slabbed by ANACS, but I have no Idea it had been cleaned. Regardless I am going to sell it in the slab.

I will try to list the auction today...my Ebay username is ussatyeo if anyone wants to check it out!

ANACS is a decent holder. I guess it's better than paying $20 to get no holder.

Listing it as is in an ANACS holder would probably still get you more than had you listed it raw.
