Hello all. First time posting, so hello to all of you. Please be understanding if I have missed some rules or guidelines. So, on topic. My father is a goldsmith, and few years ago he found a coin in an old cup (trophy) of some kind. I would like your help to find the origins of this coin, as well as potential value. I did try to google, but could not come close. It seems that coin is from 1602.and it is silver. Pleas find two photos below. Looking forward to your help. Thank you.
Hey. Thank you for a quick reply. Did the upload from my mobile phone, that is why it was as it was. Hope this is ok?
If I am reading it correctly, The side with the date says "Money of the Free City of Coronensis (?)" That may be a start to help you search. I could be way off though. Found it in an ebook: https://books.google.com/books?id=5...age&q=sigis trans et sag rom imp prin&f=false
Thank you for starting the research.Yes, found something similar. But could not move any further. It seems that is has some connection with Romanian region.
Best I can find is Transylvania, Kronstadt Thaler This is your coin but it doesn't have a Krause number that I can find and can't speak to its authenticity https://www.allnumis.com/coins-cata...lf-ii-1599-1604/1-thaler-1602-kronstadt-33131 Perhaps @spirityoda can have more luck. He's really good with finding foreign coins.
I did not see your coin in my catalog. The year was not listed there. I did do the Kronstadt search and also came up with the link in the post above this 1. Scratching my head on this 1. Could be in another catalog that contains the dates from 1599-1604 ??? I would also ask @Siberian Man or @panzerman about this coin. They might know much more about this coin. Very cool and interesting coin you have here.
The coin is a Kronstadt mint, modern day Brasov,Romania. The type was minted under Sigismund Bathory's(the enemy of my avatar actually!!!) last rule over Transylvania,1601-1602,if i'm not wrong.I've found a modern copy of the type (2-1/2) and a genuine 2 thaler piece, weighting 58 grams,in the picture below.Personaly i don't ''like'' the coin and i wouldn't consider it genuine, but for you to be 100% sure, get some expert advice on it.Try contacting Kunker, they will most likely clarify things for you!
