I don't collect them as I do get the mint and proof sets which contains the president sets that's plenty for my grandkids to enjoy as they might be worth something when they grow up I do find the mint has way to many coin programs which renders them worthless for many many years and mostly will never be worth much I think first day strikes are just a money grabber I do have certified but only for what I collect I do try to get the high grades tho as they would be worth more than others but mostly collect for the enjoyment and sometimes the historical and so my grandkids can have the same I hope

I was updating the market values of my presidential cover series coins this morning and noticed that the values have increased substantially over the past couple of months. I'm also noticing more sales of the "old dogs" in the recent weeks as reported by coinupdate.com. The sold out Truman has risen in value to over $100 while the soon to sell out Ike has risen to over $40 (I'm not sure why since it is still available at the US mint for $20). Based on current sales, I would guess that the Ike will sell out within the next month. It seems like a sure bet to buy them while they last. Here is the updated mintage versus market value.

It appears to late to buy Ike's. They are no longer shown on the mint's website. It make explain why they are already selling for $40 on the bay.

Some interesting facts about the dead president cover series.

    (1) Truman is now selling for over $100 despite its slow sellout.
    (2) Truman was the first sell out since Abraham Lincoln, which took its time to reach its sellout. You can still buy a Lincoln for less than $20 on the bay.
    (3) Eisenhower followed the Truman sellout in one of the most telegraphed values of the past year from the mint. It is now selling for $60 (three times the sales price).
    (4) The mint is still showing the 2009 dead presidents for sale on its website despite not showing any sales for quite some time. I've asked for updated sales figures from the mint, but got no response.
    (5) The 1st term Cleveland is not an easy one to find as it isn't shown on the page with the rest of the dead presidents. If you search for Cleveland P52, you can find the younger version of the old geezer.
    (6) The next sellout will probably be either Grant (less than 2,000 left) or Johnson (about 2,500 left). If history is worth anything, only Johnson with the lower mintage will give any value.
    (7) Reagan will probably create some interest in this series and lead to the sellout of Johnson.
    (8) The mint will probably set a target of 35,000 for Reagan (my wild guess), which is 20,000 more than Truman, Eisenhower, and Johnson.

Truman is now selling at between $225-$250 on the bay (11-12 times sales price).

We're now at the end of the presidential dollar program with the release of the Reagan dollar. I thought it was a good time to update the mintage, market value, and original sales price list. The values have been generally lackluster with the exception of the Truman cover, which is worth nearly $200. Eisenhower is OK at about $40 with the rest with values below the original sales price.

As we near the end of 2016, I thought it was a good time to update the dead presidents cover series (minted, sold, left, and market value). Reagan continues to get pretty good sales but it is slowing down. I doubt they will run out any time soon. The Truman continues to be the king of this series with a value near $200. Eisenhower is next at about $45 with the rest below $20 with many at $10 or less. If the mint stops selling this laggard serious suddenly, it may push the value of some of the low mintage presidents such as Taft, Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, Johnson, and Ford. It is my hope since I've been stupid enough to buy 3 of each one.

Recently, the mint has announced a last chance sale that includes all the dead presidents. It appears that the dead presidents will be extinguished after the holiday season. Thus, I thought it a good time for an update. Truman has lost market value since the last update but is still holding a value of $100 with Eisenhower in second at about $42. The rest are either at or lower than initial sales price. Hoover and Ford are showing the least interest at sales of under 13,000. It will be interesting to see if these guys increase in value after the discontinuance. Personally speaking, I would say "No".

Why in the world are Truman and Eisenhower so high? They don't have the lowest sales and their mintages aren't that different from those that are the lowest. But their values are ridiculously higher.

I'm thinking that the spike in the value of the Truman and Ike sets is due to people wanting to build a complete set as the end of the series approached. Once these sets have been built, there'll be little new demand for them, as interest in the sets overall will diminish. I bought and flipped a bunch of the Washington ones when they came out. Probably made a couple bucks. Since then, I've pretty much forgotten about these.

The Truman set sold out and caused an initial spike to about $200/set. The Eisenhower later sold out but only got a spike to about $50/set. Both have been both sold out for over a year. Both sets had a limit of 15,000 while earlier sets that sold out had limits of 40,000. The mint kept lowering the limit until they found the sweet spot at 15,000 (Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson). Thus, the sell out of the first two. Between Eisenhower and Kennedy, they raised the limit of the Kennedy to 35,000. After Johnson, they had the limit at 20,000 except Reagan at 25,000. I'm interested in the low selling Hoover and Ford sets after the discontinuance. I'm betting that they die a slow death with values less than $10 each. Currently, the Hoover can be had at $10 on the bay but you really can buy the Ford unless you get it from the mint at $20.

AND, I need to state that these quick sell out's created an overly inflated Market which survived up until 2008 after the HH Limits were imposed.

We've been battling these danged HH Limits ever since.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Are there really 15,000 collectors of these that want them? Or are there 4 dealer/speculators holding 14,500, and people who are actually interested in them are left to scrabble over what's left?

No offense, but I find it hard to believe there are actually 15,000 people who collect these. Many of them are probably speculators.

That being said, I do admire your passion for this incredibly obscure niche. As long as you enjoy it, that's what's really important!

The reason that I like the presidential series is that I'm a big history buff that has read about many of our former leaders. I know that they are overpriced but it is better than spending several dollars for a Starbuck's coffee or buying other non sense stuff at a convenience store. I'm into our country and our presidents. They have put everything on hold to serve.

And I thought perhaps Truman and Ike were more popular because maybe the age group of those collecting these had those two as their president when they were children or the years they were born...

i.e., I was born during Ike's term, so I might be more partial to get that one of all the moderns...

The mint has finally killed the cover sets of the dead presidents. As you can no longer buy these duds, I thought it was a great time to finalize the statistics. Truman continues to lead the pack with a value just north of $100. The only others in this series with up values are Eisenhower ($30) and Reagan ($25). The highest sales (final mintages) were Adams (49,969), Washington (49,800), and Jefferson (49,396). They are all selling at about $5 on the bay. I'm thinking that they won't go lower than two bucks. The lowest sales were Hoover (12,585), Ford (12,782), Coolidge (13,060), and Harding (13,197). Despite their low final mintages, I'm seeing little increase in value with almost no sales activity. It doesn't bode well for the future Truman value. What follows is the autopsy so they may finally rest in peace:

Here is the latest update on the dead presidents cover series. I still own three of each in the white envelopes. It will be interesting to see if George H. W. Bush joins the fray.

Can the same resource you used find the information on the presidential covers be used to find out about the State quarters covers?
