2007 First Spouse Series One-Half Ounce Gold Proof Coin Martha Washington This year marks the inaugural year of the First Spouse Gold Coin Series, the United States Mint’s first coin series to feature our Nation’s First Spouses.

Four, one-half ounce, $10 24-karat Gold First Spouse Coins will be minted and released annually in the order the spouses served in the White House. The coins will be minted in proof and uncirculated condition and are available individually.

Each First Spouse Gold Coin will coincide with the release of the four circulating Presidential $1 Coins annually. In 2007, the United States Mint will release the first four coins in the series which include: Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty and Dolley Madison. Martha Washington: The obverse designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna, is inspired by Martha Washington’s portrait by Charles Wilson Peale.

The reverse, designed by Susan Gamble, United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer, and sculpted by Don Everhart, United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver features Martha Washington sewing a button on her husband’s uniform jacket..

I am sure glad that I will be unable to buy these spouce coins. I have to work for a living and it is not always convient for me to be by a computer or by a telephone at 12:00 and spend some serious time trying to get through. I am such a lucky guy.

I wish I was as lucky. Unfortunately, I'm semi retired and have no place to be at 12:00 noon on release day except signed on at some internet portal somewhere in the world. I'm just not that fortunate. I'm cursed, I tell ya cursed. Bugger.

Are the first spouce coins worth buying? So far I have purchaced all that have been issued both proof and uncirculated.I am beginning to have my doubts. Will they be nusmatic or bullion only? I am disapointed with them [they are ugly plus I feel I am being raped by the mint.I would like some input from other collectors.Thankyou Dick

I'm with ya brother. I don't know the answers to your questions, but I'm in the same boat and feel the same way. Every day I struggle with these same thoughts. I, however, think these coins are beautiful and look forward to each and every coin in the series.... but then again there isn't a coin that I don't love!

Howdy Dick - Welcome to the Forum !

Pardon my comments above, but I gotta get spock every chance I get - just to keep up with him :D

As for whether the coins are worth it or not - only you can ask that question for yourself. The mint charges a premium on every coin they sell and the same question can be asked about every one of them. I guess it just depends on whether you like the coins well enough to pay the premium.

You're not gonna find a First Spouse coin in circulation. They have over $450 worth of gold in each coin (with gold trading at over $900). No one is gonna spend one for $10.
