Yes, he does. But now I more fully understand his thoughts and agree with them about Ebay being the "only" place to find coins. Want lists, dealer buddies, coin shows and a network are far more useful and important when purchasing coins than Ebay will ever be.

I do however disagree strongly about feedback being meaningless. I find it inconceivable that one should disregard it.

Fair enough Jack, but how meaningful is the positive feedback from a buyer that pays, say $50 for an obviously altered coin like a '44-D Lincoln turned into and '14-D ? How meaninful is the positive feedback for an obviously harshly cleaned or artificially toned Lincoln ? How meaningful is the positive feedback for a coin that the buyer paid $200 for when the coin is only worth $20 ?

There have been countless threads on this forum where more knowledgeable members express their sympathy, their outrage, their utter amazement at what some ebay buyers do. Do you deny that ? Of course you don't. Well - who do you think is leaving all that positive feedabck on ebay ? Just the knowledgeable buyers ? Or do you not think that a whole lot of that positive feedback is coming from these self same buyers who can't tell the difference between an altered coin and a genuine coin ?

    Get my point ?

think about it differently for a minute. Feedback by strangers is not worth the paper its written on and if a seller sells u a 10k coin and then decides thats the time to go dishonest what will you do.

Let me ask one last question - the ebay seller known as abon or any of his several other names - he has literally thousands and thousands of positive feedbacks. How meaningful is that positive feedback ? And there are thousands of others just like him.

So I stand my ground - positive feedback is meaningless. The only thing that has any true meaning is the seller himself.

OK, well done again Doug......Thats why your the mod, you make sense.

I add this tho, correctly researched, feeback CAN be a tool for a smart and well educated buyer, WHO KNOWS the ins and outs of Ebay. There, we just eliminated all of the meaningless feedbacks you so correctly identified:eek:

I'm living proof that my feedback apparently was meaningless.... two years ago I started collecting pre 1982 commems and I paid some good money for some "UNC" commems. I received some "very nice, shinny" coins, but had no clue at the time they had problems. I left some glowing feedback. Since then I have learned a lot more about grading coins, in fact my knowledge has more than tripled in the past 4 months. Now I just want to cry after realizing how much I paid for cleaned coins. Some are worth half of what I paid. What a shame.... But I learned a lesson - an expensive one at that. Had I known then what I know now, I would have sent them all back! :headbang:

I'll answer your question spock and then let's get back on topic.

Yes, I agreed to bet you on whether or not I could find a coin that European graders would grade as XF and yet a TPG would grade it as MS. That is all I agreed to do. We never agreed on what that coin would be. We also never agreed on what the stakes of the bet would be. You made several comments about what you wanted the coin to be and about what you wanted the stakes to be. However, I never agreed to any of them.

Now if you wish to pursue this, fine. But do so privately. And before I will pursue it we will agree on the particulars.
