When sharing coins, please include full photos of both sides of the coin. This helps us see the whole picture. I’m curious about that weird spot at LI in liberty. Also, the coin seems strangely colored. Is that from the lighting?
It could be. My gut says acid sat on it for a while and that’s environmental damage, which would explain the coloring. It’s why I hope we will get full photos.
It's hard to tell 3 dimensional aspects of an object from a two dimensional photo, but, here goes, when looking straight at the coin, the area to the left of the crack/line/seam appears to be ever so slightly lower than the area to the right of the crack/line/seam, and the area beyond the dark line appears to be lower still. If true, what that might mean, I'm not entirely sure of, but it was that look that made me think de-lam in the first place. Let's call in the experts : @paddyman98 @Fred Weinberg
I can say this.. It is definitely not a Die Drack. If it was it would appear raised. It is a crack on the Die itself so when the Die strikes the Blank Planchet the metal would flow into the Crack and appear raised on the coin. I don't see that on the Quarter in question. But I see you stated that it was just a crack so I didn't need to explain all that So what do I think it could be? I'm not sure. Looks like the Clad layer was affected somehow. I'm not calling it a Lamination. But I will say I'm a bit stumped.
Your coin looks to be a Lamination defect more than a die crack. There seems be more missing metal than raised metal at the point in question. It seems to be one of those coins that need to be viewed from many different angle to get a clearer idea of what it is. I would put it away and go back to it in 6 months.
As an outsider who doesnt know much about coins,it appears to have been hit with something....Note the slight hump to the south of the large crack. Almost like it was bent to the point of cracking then bent back....idk....that's my guess
The color of the photo is off, but the surfaces seem off/enviornmental damage. It's not a die crack, that's for sure. One close up photo looks like a lamination, but cladding doesn't do that (not talking about split clad layers) Based on the off-color photo, and the surfaces of the obv. (again, from the photos), it appears to be some type of damage to me. Bring that one to the ANA in Chicago, if you want. Someone would need to see it in-hand to know exactly what caused the 'line'.
