Give me a min, but why would the S appear to have a shadow or seemingly doubling also, I belive the mintmark is struck from the rest ? I have a 68S that looks like its from the exact die. Ill post.
I found this in older CT ….. Doubling is flat not circular meaning that its Machine doubling. Also its the 68-s, 69-s,70-s That are notorious for machine doubling and not worth much.

I did not see a DD in any of the above posts. The mintmark is added to the working die, so any machine doubling can affect both areas, only a couple of real DD also have a RPM. jim
those would be 2 die chips filling in the first pics/OP of the 1968 S In order to form the "S" there has to be two small points sticking out of the die to form a place for the metal *not* to fill. With the metal flow, it can easily break off those two points, and this cause the two small die chips. Thus the inside of the "S"s look filled in.
