Well today was certainly interesting for me. I was off work. As many know I do painting and drywall. Getting tight now as new home construction is plummeting. So, I'm going to fire up some auctions. Need some supplies for that so I went to the local coin shop. Haven't been there in months. When money is tight this is the LAST place I need to go - took a while to get over the withdrawal symptoms but I did. So I get there and the bosses assistant says "Clembo! Haven't seen you in ages!" Yes, he did call me clembo and I explained why. The owner was busy but he's always the man that makes decisions. He gets freed up and I talk to him for a couple of minutes. He offers me a job! Now, I've done a bit of "work" for him in the past. Sorting albums, sidewalk sales but he's really serious today. I told him I would seriously consider it. The pay isn't as good but the "perks" are pretty nice. Get to see a lot of coins as they come in. I do know his assistant has a pretty nice collection of toned Morgans because of this. When I got home I called my boss. He's a really good guy and has treated me very well. Asked him just how busy we were going to be (although I have a pretty good idea). Told him I was considering part time. He says go for it and he'll work around my schedule at the coin shop. Think I'm going to go for it. Start part time and see what happens. The coin shop is closed on Wednesdays so I'll contact the owner and see if we can iron out details then. Probably give him a call tomorrow to set it up. So that's exciting now isn't it? Well, it gets better. Sorted a bunch of wheaties today (hey had the time) and found this. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/ds.jpg Think I got me a 1944 D/S. Like I said. An interesting day!
my pal clembo a dealer things are looking up i say pretty soon ill have a great coins congrats hope you have a great time and become a big shot dealer
Heres a 44 d/s #2, I think you have one. I see a little "hook" sticking out under the paint on the left of the D, it's acetone time clembo !! EDIT: I did not blow off the job news, I commented by email....but again, right on Clembo !!
clembo: Take it from me, the rewards are some that you'd have never expected. I look forward to working with coins and as far as what comes across the counter... stuff I have only seen at the ANA or really big shows!!! Let us know what your take is on it as you go... I look forward to hearing the stories
Thanks Mike, It is the dream job here on CT. no doubt. I have to weigh the "issues" though. Would be my second major career change in 5 years and I ain't getting any younger. I won't just abandon my current boss. He took me in and taught me a trade and I hope the owner of the coin shop will see that. Think he will actually as he's asked me about painting jobs in the past when I was WAY too busy to even consider them. I actually have seen some of his better purchases in the past. At one point he had three 1856 Flying Eagles. 2 proof and one business along with a high grade1955DDO. The 3 Cent Nickel set he bought is AWESOME. Think he's still got them all as he really didn't want to break the set. Gonna get interesting and I'll keep y'all posted. clembo
lol thats life you ya, things are getting tight and your drop by to pickup stuff so you can sell on ebay, and you get offered a job. nice
Clembo congrats my man :hail: I hope that it all goes well for you and that you are able to work the two jobs together :thumb:
congrats on the part time job. I think you will enjoy it, and doing something you love takes some of the work out of work. I did something similar last fall. My wife works in a grocery store and they were in the process of building a new store with an expanded wine and spirit section. My wifes boss knew I was into wine so he offered me a part time job. The time seems to fly past when I get to bs with people obout one of my passsions while I'm there. The extra money doesn't hurt either.
hey there you go! You will probably get to go to shows and interact with all kinds of collectors and dealers.
Way to go!! I'm sure you will have a ton of fun! Nothing like hands-on work to sharpen skills and grading! Speedy
Congrats, I couldnt think of a better job. I hang sheetrock most of the winter and whenever I have time off. But thats slow here too. Usually, I can call the sheetrock guy and he alwasy has me come in, but lately theres just not much going on. But playing with coins all day sure beats the dust. I dont know if you hang board or if you tape, but have you ever used a rotozip??? Theres just no way to avoid getting a face full of dust. It dries out the skin bad too, my fingers are always cracking and bleeding.
its always a toos up trying to get paid what you need, but doing what you love! the tough part will be trying to work there without buying all the interesting tid-bits you find good luck
LOL!! I hear ya man!!I Do carpentry full time and let me tell you, I have been slammed, non-stop for the last few years!! So business is good, my secret was getting out of residential and getting into the commercial side of the business.
Only hang and tape on a large scale when I have to. I'm the patch man. I fix all the things the other trades destroy Can relate to torn up hands for sure. Sanded patches on Thursday for four hours with a sanding sponge. sucks out any moisture you might have in your skin. I DO like the idea of trading a mud knife for a loupe. We've picked up a few commercial jobs but we have nothing on the books for July or August. A year ago it was chaos all of the time. Too many specs and buildings with "For Lease" on the windows. Builders are cutting back for this reason. Hurting a lot of trades out this way not just the board and paint people. If I can do both I will. Just dumb luck to walk into the shop yesterday and get an offer AND have a current boss that realizes people have to eat. Glad I'm not involved in the corporate world anymore. They just plain don't care.
