I picked up this antoninianus of Trebonianus Gallus over the weekend for less than $25. It's not even "bottom of the barrel," either:
I recently posted these elsewhere - most of my collection is barrel scrapings - here with pricing, all eBay: Commodus denarius - $12.50: Faustina As - $9.38: Septimius Severus $15.00: Gordian III - a grouchy portrait from Antioch - $12.25:
I got this ugly duckling for $15.00, it is an Andronicus coin, in the tetarteron family. What makes it interesting is its die size. 15mm. The larger version is 18mm, the smaller one listed is 12mm for die sizes. Coin size 17.7mm 3.6gm Its bigger brother ( Cost more than $25.00) Just for reference. 22mm 5.9gm There is also a smaller version at 12mm for die size. I am trying to get enough examples of the smaller sizes to prove or not prove it was a fractional currency.
I picked up this one last month for $18 including shipping. Herennia Etruscilla, (249-251 A.D.) Wife of Trajan Decius AE 28 of Viminacium, 14.2 grams Obverse: HER ETRVSCILLA AVG, draped bust right, in staphane Reverse: PMS COL VIM, female figure (Provincia Moesia) standing, facing left, between bull and lion, AN XII in exergue Reference: BMC 32
A few low end additions from lots, etc.. all very inexpensive and fun... Commodus ( I really do like his portrait here.. very dashing!) : Domitian is concentrating really hard .."which group should I persecute next?" Gordian III ... poor fella looks like he could chalk the end of a pool cue... Julian II.... right out of the swamp... Probus and stick figures
Glad this thread was resurrected. CT has the best barrel scrapings. Picked this one up for $15 last month. THRACE, Maroneia AE20. 7.34g, 20.1mm. THRACE, Maroneia, circa after 146 BC. I'm really enjoying the coins posted on this thread - there is some really amazing things here for really bargain prices. Here are a couple I got recently that I was really pleased with (perhaps inordinately pleased). The Trajan, worn almost to a slick, still has a great portrait, and something about the way it has survived the centuries with that wonderful Trajan profile really appeals to me. A very common issue, it was apparently struck for Trajan as he embarked on his last campaign, in Parthia, soon after which he died, Fortuna Redux or not. It was $5.50 - and I have a much nicer one I got in '13, but I think I prefer this one. Trajan Denarius (114-117 A.D.) Rome Mint [IMP CAES] NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GERM [DAC], laureate draped bust right / PM TRP COS VI P[P SPQR], Fortuna seated l., holding rudder & cornucopiae, FORT [RED]. RIC 318; RSC 154; Sear 984 (3.20 grams / 19 mm) The Constantine Chlorus has some unfortunate scratches obverse, but again, I really like the massive, bulky cartoonish portrait, as well as the mottled toning/patina and the big flan. It was a little over $3.00 from a lot of even junkier stuff. Constantius I Chlorus as Caes. (struck by Maximian) Follis (301 A.D.) Aquileia CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES, laureate head right / SACRA MONET AVGG ET CAESS NOSTR, Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae, V in right field, mintmark AQΓ. RIC VI Aquileia 32a. (8.70 grams / 26 mm) Keep 'em coming. I like looking at this stuff.
This is not a new coin, it was one of my first Byzantine coins and one of my first vcoins purchases I picked up about 6 years ago or so. Took a new pick of it last week. I don't remember what I paid for it, not much, but probably more than I would now. Maurice Tiberius, 582-602 AD. AE Follis O: helmeted and cuirassed bust facing, holding globus cruciger and shield. R: Large M; cross above, delta below, date across field (year 5, 586/587 AD)., CON below. 30 mm, 12.0 g.
$7.50 from an auction last year.... A great coin - and for a newbie I was extremely happy to get this (very early in my collecting career - I was jumping around excited!!). I will never sell it... sometimes it's nice to keep your wins!
