I am new here and have recently puchased a "most likely counterfeit" $3 Indian princess coin. I am wanting to replace it with a quality, yet affordable, one. There are two "slabbed" coins on ebay that I am viewing right now. I'm interested on other's opinions of these two coins and which one they would go for if given the choice. I'm also interested in any "warning signs" with either of these purchases.

    thanks, John

I like the 2nd coin better. A nice richly colored circulated coin, plus one has to take the sellers FB into account.

I love how lower grade gold coins still hold tons of detail and eye appeal.

and I agree with bone on the 2nd one

Yeah. I think that I agree with you guys; but not just because of the looks, but also the 1858 has a major rarity factor going for it. Only around 2,000 minted!! Even most of the key dates out there can't compare with that kind of rarity. Fortunately, the rarity doesnt command much of a premium for the coin, so it is still accessible.

    What they said.

Plus bear in mind that although both are undoubtedly authentic based on the fact that top tier TPGs have slabbed them, but the first one is "ex-jewelry", which means it has some damage.

I agree with what's been said and I like the second one much better. The fact that the first is ex-jewelry does turn me off, but I agree with Bone...I really like the color of the second coin.

If I HAD to make a choice between only those two, I'd go with the VF.
The first coin is a coin with an problem and will ALWAYS be a coin with a problem.

I personally would continue looking for an XF coin.
But if that VF stays low in price, snap it up.

so, moral of the story: better to buy a low-grade problem free coin than a high-grade coin with issues? that is the sense I'm getting here, as both coins are essentially in the same price range.

I'd like to get a XF coin too, but I'm working with limited funds due to my last burn. Also, this is probably the rarest "mintage wise" Indian princess coin I've seen come online in quite some time....more rare than any of the "s" and "o" mintage ones. The PCGS-30 grade is listed at $1,250, so what would you guys think a fair "max" price would be? Just looking for opinions.

    thanks,
    John

An 1858 VF has a CDN Bid value of $775.
If you can get it for at most 20% over that, go for it.

The first coin seems OK -- if you are all right with the damage associated with removal of the jewelry. The seller has a return policy, but includes a restocking fee (3% to6%). That would make my shy away from purchasing this coin, setting aside the ex-jewelry concerns with the coin itself.

The second coin is very nice, in my opinion. The seller is a good one with a return policy without restocking fee. This is a coin I would feel confident in bidding on.

And there's the rub (pun intended).

How do you feel about problem coins ? i.e. would you rather have "XF details w/ problems net VF", or a nice VF ?

In this case, the second coin is much preferable IMO. Regardless of details, the first coin has poor eye appeal IMO.

I agree with most, the second one is the better of the two.

Might as well throw my vote in for the second one. It has great color and interesting detail. Good luck on which ever coin you go with.

Definitely Coin #2. I prefer originality over a problem coin.

So does the marketplace. Later on, it's always easier to sell an original coin.

I found a 1870 model but it too had been in jewelry and you could see the marks from the bezel. That sucked!

Thanks for the input guys. Anyways, I wanted to change the subject somewhat, thought it still falls in this category.

I'm curious if anyone has experience with counterfeit coin ebay purchases and how they resolved the issue? I purchased the coin in a bezel originally, but the seller says he wont accept a return since I took it out of the bezel. This was after I informed him it was a counterfeit.

I am certain he knew the coin was a counterfeit, since I asked him multiple times about its authenticity, and he dodged the issue each time.....

I plan to get a written letter from an expert when he finds it to be counterfeit. Also notify ebay and paypal regarding the transaction...

Then try to get the money back(I know it is unlikely). Any other suggestions in how I should proceed? Any inputs would be extremely helpful. The seller is an american powerseller with good feedback and open auctions, so I was surprised they he dealt in this business. Here is a link to my discussion(and pics of the coin) in the introduction section.

If you have not already left him feedback you can leave a Neg and explain that he sold you a counterfeit. I wouldn't count on a lot of help from eBay or PayPal. It's gonna be hard to force him to accept the coin as a return since you altered the coin by removing it from the bezel.

I hope you didn't get burned for too much money on this coin. Good luck.
