A bargain purchase; this coin comes in umpteen varieties and attributing it was a bear! Time of Severus Alexander, AD 231-235. Quasi-autonomous AE 25.1 mm, 11.60 g, 7 h. Koinon of Macedon. Obv: AΛЄΞANΔPOV, diademed head of Alexander the Great with flowing hair, right. Here's the listing in Imhoof-Blumer (AMNG IIIa, p. 106): Post your coins of Koinon of Macedon, Alexander the Great, or anything you feel is relevant.
Your coin is part of a large series, and a great type at that. Very hard to date as is mine supposedly from around the time of yours to Gordian III. Roman Provincial. MACEDON. Koinon of Macedonia. Pseudo-autonamous 222 AD to 249 AD . Æ (27mm, 11.19 g, 6h). Beroea mint. OBV: AΛEΞANΔPOC bust of Alexander the Great right, flowing hair. REV: KOINMA KE ΔONΩN.B.NE Two tetrastyle temple façades; in field between, column surmounted by statue. Unpublished in the standard references. VF, green surfaces, ragged edge, some smoothing and roughness.
I love that! The coin advertises there are two neocorates in the city (B NE) and there are two detailed tetrastyle temples to illustrate that. I also like the column with a statue in between them. Very desirable coin, @Ancient Aussie !
Cool koinon @Roman Collector ! Very nice, I really like the Alex riding Bucephalus scene on the reverse! I don’t think I have that subject, even though I had a dog named Bucephalus. Here's another one of the series that I've posted several times before that shows the taming of Bucephalus.
As we have shown above, these are hard to find in great condition but never boring. I wish I understood the thought process behind the dating of individual types. Mine is ugly, off centered and over-cleaned but shows two agonistic urns with legend O/LYM/PIA. I lied, this Athena may be a bit more boring than most types but the chunky surface is at least strange.
I really enjoy this coin, and would love to have one sometime. It is a great historical-subject piece for me. Would you post the attributes again?
MACEDON. Koinon. Pseudo-autonomous. Time of Gordian III (238-244 AD). Æ (28mm, 13.79 gm, 12h). Obv: AΛEΞANΔPOY. Diademed head of Alexander right; lightning bolt ("blitz") below neck on right. Rev: KOINON MAKEΔONΩN B NE - Ω below E, Alexander standing on left, placing harness on Bucephalus rearing on right. AMNG III 557.
I really love this coin too. It’s facinating to me that this shows a story that many of us know... on a coin that’s nearly 1800 years old. And at the time of this coin’s minting, the story it’s telling was already ancient at nearly 600 years old. It’s amazing. It looks like PeteB beat me to posting the attribution. After my two-year-old finally goes to bed, I’ll see if my attribution matches. The type is hard to find... and even more so in good condition. Keep looking out, hopefully another will pop up soon!
Great coins all and fun thread idea! I could go on and on about koinon... I have it recorded as: MACEDON. Koinon. Pseudo-autonomous. Time of Gordian III (238-244). Ae. Obv: ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ. Diademed head of Alexander III of Macedon right. Rev: KOIN MAKEΔONΩN ΔIC NEOK. SNG Copenhagen 1357; BMC 108 I do not own the reference books listed and tracked down the attribution from similar coins in auction histories... so this may or may not be totally accurate.
I just have always enjoyed the story of Alexander and Bucephalus... just cool. I named my first Basset Hound ‘Bucephalus’ when I got her for my kids in the early 80’s... They called her Bucy!
