Hey folks! I am wondering your opinion of if it would be worth the money to send these three cents in to PCGS or NGC? and your best guess on their value. Thanks!!!
im not sure if you would want to send them in but i know that base price for a g-4 is around $30. yours look to be VG or F
@Ricer, I like your FEs. I would grade them slightly higher than @jonathan layne. Left to right, I'd go 20, 25, 15 but would want to see them in hand before swearing they'd go that high. I like their original surfaces. The more important question is: have you checked for the overdate, 1858/7? I can't tell from the obverse photo but I see a small hint of something in the one to the far right. Could you post a real close-up of that one? Steve
Oops, forgot to address the value. IF, and that's a big if, you had an overdate, then, of course I'd send it off. If not, none of these three are worth slabbing IMHO. Steve
I don't think coins like these require grading, unless it's something you want in your collection. (A graded flying eagle.) Coins are transitory, we hold them for a while but eventually what it comes down to they are bought and sold. Dealers and collectors know what these are worth without it being encased in a plastic slab. If they are going to be sold (eventually) why raise your costs?
Thanks guys, interesting perspectives. If it makes a difference, these were purchased for $5 each. @Michael K sounds like deep philosophical musings... do we really own anything? everything is just temporal. @Stevearino This is the best pic I have right now. I didn't see anything hinting to it being a 8/7 by looking at the wing tip at least.
$5 for mildly worn FE's is a deal! These are striking coins. Very beautiful, but wear easily. Thus, high grade ones command high prices, and its worthwhile to have them graded. People who spend a lot on a coin want the assurance of TPG. As it stands now, you could easily sell them raw for a profit. Add in grading costs and that changes.
Yea do your research on both the coins and PCGS and Heritage Auctions. They are the best . It looks like the coin on the left is a small letter , the middle coin is a large letter and the last coin is a small letter too. You can tell by the A and the M in America. If they are touching it's a large letter, if there is a space it's a small letter. I like your coins very much. I think you can make a pretty decent profit.
Well, I've got a guy. Lol. He inherited his father's collection and just isn't that into it. Claims to have all kinds high value coins. When I asked if he has flying eagles he said yup, there is 64 of them $5 each... So my son and I bought 12 of them for $60. Said he has a 1856 flying eagle too. So I don't know, I don't have tons of money to put into coins so we were trying to flip some of these FEs so we could keep trading up but it's been a bit tough to sell them for close to what I believe them to be worth. So with only having $5 in each of them I wondered if I got a couple graded would make it easier to get close closer to pcgs price listed value. He even gave us a free 1859 indian head and extra FE that was in G4 condition. So anyway. I do have 4 FEs for sale.
