Hello I am in the market to purchase an atocha/Spanish coin and have come across a nice coin in a local shop but it does not come with papers please if you have any information let me know what you think. If this does not belong in this forum please let me know.
Maybe you should contact the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum in Key West to verify its authenticity. I noticed this replica listed in their jewelry for sale. https://www.melfisherstore.com/product-page/2-reale-odd Chris
I concur with no papers you'll want to contact the Mel Fisher Museum. Even if they had papers you would want to contact them to authenticate the piece/paperwork.
It appears to be a spanish cob. They were made by the spanish government in the 1500s and were crude so they could be make quickly and easily. I am not too sure what denomination it it from the picture, but it is out of a realz. I hope that this helps.
Thank you everyone for the quick responses I think i'm going to take the advice of the majority and contact them to get it authenticated
One thing. I am not an expert but do own some old cobbs and have seen many many fakes. Yours appears genuine to my eyes....For the most part, these are not terribly rare or expensive coins. On the Cobb you displayed I would bet the gold bezel has more intrinsic value than the Cobb itself. Daniel Sedgwick is the go to authority on these. If he gives his blessing you can be 100% certain it is the genuine article.
Wow that looks like a nice piece. Would really depend on the price. Looks pretty legit. If it's on the higher side, I'd want a certificate to go with it....that's where the money is in the collectable atotcha stuff. I think I saw someplace where a person could resubmit a piece to be certified.
We visited the museum in Key West and in the attached coin shop, authentic coins started in the thousands for the cheapest ones.
