Maybe it was supposed to be "9" but 7, 8, 9? ...And got fat! Lol Some will scream post mint damage. However, they seem to not understand that post mint damage can flatten but it cannot add "mass". This "7" is large and equivalently raised as the other "7". So, only 2 choices: - some of the die chipped away and left a larger "7" when the planchet was struck. - or, less likely, there was an die prep error causing a class IV doubling with only one device being doubled. The "7".
The last '7' in the date is damaged from a contact mark with something while the coin was already in circulation.
Or Choice 3 - The 7 suffered a hit which caused the metal to be displaced outward. As the 7 was hit the metal spread outward. PMD, nothing more
Can I ask what measuring tool you used to measure the height of the last "7" as opposed to the other digits? To me, the "shadow effect" surrounding the last "7" seems thinner than on the other digits which would lead me to conclude that it is not as high. Therefore, it is just mashed a bit and has the same mass. Chris
I disagree. From the looks of that visible quadrant of the coin, I'd have to pontificate that the LIBERTY gang migrated to the IGWT gang and had an out of control weekend!!! Man they had a good time!! So much so that both gangs are missing and expected the 7, 8 or 9 to be dead if not pregnant! Well it fell to the last 7, who still wears her beer goggles and got FAT, or preggers!,,,,,,,, Or option 2: the 7 just got smashed!
