Pomerania Bogislaw XIV Reichstaler 1631 with two wild men

 

Just picked up a couple of new ones. Neither one is particularly scarce but the 1693 has been graded MS62 by NGC. Grades in these don't usually matter to me. I got it more to compare to some lower graded pieces in my collection. NGC and others are pretty inconsistent in grading of these in my opinion.

There is a town in the Harz Mountains called Wildemann (translation = Wildman). It's near Goslar (where Chris' last coin was minted) and Clausthal-Zellerfeld. The Harz region is wildemann territory.

I spent a semester at the Technische Universität Clausthal over 30 years ago. Never saw a wildemann, however.

 

Well, it was unplanned but I added another piece this week. I have wanted a mining thaler for a while. This one just happens to also have a couple of wildmen

That's a great coin. I need to do some more research on mining thalers.

I wish I would have paid more attention to the history of the Zellerfeld mint during the semester I spent at the Universitat Clausthal-Zellerfeld. They school was famous for its mine engineering programs ( I was there for material science). Sometimes you don't recognize a great opportunity until it's gone. But I did develop an appreciation for the Wildemann and the witches of the Brocken.

 

Picked up a couple more at this past Sunday's Heritage sale of the "Morris Collection". I not sure who Morris is/was but they had a nice collection of pieces from all over the world.

These are the pictures I took after mocking up each case in the living room. They will be cleaned up before displaying in Chicago but you will get the point.

 

Having seen these exact coins in hand I have to say congratulations. They are interesting and quite eye appealing. I think you will be very pleased with them!

You are correct. Just got them in the mail yesterday. Heritage usually does a good job on the photos. I almost didn't bid on the 1655 because of the glare at the "hairline". Fortunately, it was just a glare as I suspected.

 

I downloaded the PDF and put it in my "Sociology" folder.

That 1701 24mg is particularly well struck.

 

I picked up both of these last month in Chicago at the ANA show.

The second one appears to have been lacquered. I am in the process of trying to remove this because it has an odd look.

 

I just bought the 1701 today at the santa clara show. my dealer just bought it recently and saved it for me. now after seeing all your coins above, I see I have many more to look for.
