LOL, I am still waiting for my copper Ike to come across the bank counter. On a serious note, any bank in my area will only accept coins rolled with "your" name on it...& thats if you have an account...no account the address has to be on the roll as well. Guess I wouldn't have gotten away with bringing them into the bank in a toolbox.... Unless of course there was a teller just looking to scarf them up to give to a bud standing in line with good ears. Cheers
I've held off saying anything till now because I respected your and everyone else's right to voice their opinion about GG's lucky find. However, you continue to ride the issue and I felt it was time to put in my 2 cents. I'm not sure who voted YOU "CT's Moral Compass" but you've made it IMMENSELY clear what YOU would do if YOU uncovered these silver halves. No doubt you would start your own thread touting your generosity and quite frankly... that's okay. However, you're working under several assumptions. The first is that these coins were deposited by a senior citizen. Why does it have to be a senior citizen, why couldn't it be someone under the age of 65? Why couldn't it be someone who doesn't care if they could have gotten 12x face for them? Maybe they did not have the time, inclination or need to sell them to a coin dealer, through eBay or place an ad on craigslist. Whatever the case, you are not only judging GG but the teller, the bank AND the depositor. The ultimate decision to deposit those coins lay squarely on the shoulders of the depositor. It is not the job of the teller to open those rolls, inspect each coin and counsel depositors on what they are worth. NOT THEIR JOB. They are there to accept and disperse American currency. Unless you where there when they rolled the coins, walked them to the bank, stood in line and stepped up to teller window to make the deposit, they are accountable. YES, we all know you would have never done that. You would have taken them to the local coin dealer and got them the most money possible for their coins. But you weren't there and those coins returned into circulation. But now your "opinion" is sounding a lot like envy driven self righteousness. I believe everyone who has read this thread knows where you stand. But now that it has become a little more personal and you are unable to share in GG's good fortune, maybe it's time for you to move on to one of the many other informative threads on this forum.
I just read another post from ALLDRR about another person here on coin talk that got 2 rolls for 15.00 and it turned out to be 1964 quarters and some silver dimes,,,,,,and over course there he goes again stating that he should keep half and donate the rest to a senior citizen.......give me a break!
Ok... my assertion still stands. It's not the job of the teller to search through every coin brought in a toolbox, milk carton, mayo jar or burlap sack.
edited I'll behave myself...thanks for serving. Please respect my opinion though on high-fiving about finding "the lottery" on coins that were turned into a bank in a toolbox.....
Just so things are straight here. I never saw the tool box, and never saw the person that turned them in. All these coins were in a bank bag that was sealed. I still had no idea that they were silver, or what was in the bag. I had to buy the whole bag ( $1000/2000 coins). I still had to go through the whole bag ( basically roll searching if you ask me ). I dont have little secret friends at the bank. The girl that made the comment I never saw before cause she was new. And the other girl that I did know had no idea cause she was off the day before......... And since we are on the subject of this. I was at the post office today and saw a guy getting ready to pay with this 20 dollar bill. After he paid I went to the bank to get more money. Then I asked for change and took this home. So should I sell this on ebay and then keep half and give the rest to charity?
CloudSweeper, where are you...help me here. To all of Coin Talk members, my first post was "1974 silver quarter" & I pretty much got shot down.... No, I haven't sent it in yet to get authenticated as I just can't afford it....I have had it since 1977, what's a few more years. But when I do get it graded & auctioned I will certainly donate to a local charity out of the proceeds. Cheers All
General_Godlike- I support you and feel you have done nothing wrong. It disappoints me that allddr5 has chosen to be so confrontational but don't let it get to you.
Its all good....and thanks to all who are on my side. It wasnt really a problem until he sent me a little nasty private message but thats ok cause admin is handling it. I would post it but there are a few four letter words in there, and I know some of the younger crowd would like reading it.
I don't know why anyone would say anything other than congratulations and nice finds. Some old lady was long gone and the transaction was over by the time you stumbled on the load. The negative comments posted here are just silly. I'd get even friendlier with those tellers after that little find myself. The only part that makes me mad, and not really, is that those coins will never make into the boxes I pick up every week. Oh well.
I read your other post saying something like that....lol and acutally they might end up in your boxes soon cause I sold all of them Who knows you might see some soon. Yeah i gave the 2 girls that were there that day starbucks cards and gave one to the guy that was there too. But i put a little extra on the one card for one teller thats really nice to me. She acutally just ran across $750.00 worth of 1988-A twenties in 2 different blocks of sequential runs, so I have to wait till monday to get them. But seriously I wish you the best with your half search, I think I might change gears and start with just quarters and paper money. Quarters seem to be a little more readily accessable, not to mention you dont get the crazy looks when you ask for a box of quarters.....lol
Unless I missed it with all the preaching going on, did you ever post the results for the second bag? or is it still in their counter? If it's still in their counter, ask how many you need to bring in to fill the bag, or if they would sell it to you as is. Either way, congrats on the find and I'll admit it, I'm genuinely jealous.
