Not too far from my house is a speedway/gas station,snacks..I always find money on the ground outside, which I take to look at more closely at home. Some people must just throw out change from a dollar, but I do not.
Anyways the woman at the register said to me"we pick it up and put it in the jug for sick children"l didnt flinch ,I dont believe in those jug things by the register.I do donate to causes directly from time to time.Do you think I was out of line for keeping change on floor?

Unless it's thrown into a place like a fountain or similar contained area, it's discarded.

Legally, it's a little complicated. Something like a lost wallet inside a store is "lost" and there is a duty to return it to the rightful owner. Something left inside of a rented building is deemed abandoned and becomes the property of the owner of the building. Change thrown into a fountain is given. But what about change thrown on the ground?

I think it's so minor that no one has bothered to care. Legally, pick it up and take it. If the owner says to give it them, you can refuse and probably just be asked to never return. But really, no one will really make a big deal out of it I bet.

If it doesn't have a donation name on the container , I would not give it up. If a person had a $100 in change and working at the rate she probably is at, it will most likely go to a coinstar.

Yeah, with it being on the floor and asphalt outside,I figure its free to whoever wants it.about a week ago I got a 1957 penny,as change,I was as happy as a lark!!Even though there is no real value to it,i'll remember it forever.I have some huge pennies that someone must of thought they were worthless, from long ago...if only they could talk..

No Monstermommy.... I do not think you have anything to feel badly about at all. You and I are from the same generation. I too see young folks that treat change as though it is a problem to be tossed aside. Not me...... Even if you had a legal dilemma nobody would pursue it over some tossed aside change..... No ma’am. You keep rescuing that tossed aside change.

If it's on the ground outside of the establishment it's fair game for anyone to pick up and keep. The "we put it in a jug for sick children" story is just that; a story.

You're probably right.I saw a special report on the local news about how those jugs are mostly scams.I occasionally give to the USO,as they helped my son when he was in service. They gave him a sandwich with coffee and provided a cot during a long layover. That small act of kindness, really helped my son,so far from home. The jug looks shady to me anyhow!

Keeping change you picked up off the floor, no you are not out of line.

Digging it out of the jar because you don't believe in them would be another matter. :)

Don't try to justify this situation any way but simple. ... If you want to put it in the jug ... put it in the jug. If you want to keep it ... keep it.

Any opinions are as good as any other. I think is kinda cold just to outright call it a "story" without any first-hand direct information/experience.

Not at all. If the store wants to pick it up and put it in the jar, that's their choice. If you want to put it in your pocket, that's your choice. On the floor, ground, parking lot, etc. is lost until found. Found is when it is picked up. The store can say what they like but you can always take your business elsewhere.
