I could have saved you the trouble of selling it. All you havd to do was give it to me. That is one nice cent. Did it make 65 RB?

What a great coin. It's not something you see everyday.
I'm sure the new owner is really happy.

I do believe that this is the nicest one I've seen! At one show I went too last year I think there were around 10---this one looks nicer, and more free of marks, and nicks, then any I've seen before!!! I'm sure the new owner is very happy!

    Okay, I give up:
    PCGS?
    What did it grade?

Thanks for the comments. The coin is in a PCGS MS63RB holder. It is very close to full red and I think it deserves an MS64, due to its very clean, spot/streak-free surfaces and luster. In fact, I paid approximately MS64RB money for it in the auction I acquired it from.

I can understand a 64, but how can you explain a 63. Anyone have an explanation for that?

A poster on another forum commented that the high points of the obverse appeared to be discolored. And, while I don't think that would/should be a reason to down-grade it to MS63, perhaps PCGS did/does. Also, while in this particular case I have seen the coin in hand and thinks it's really nice, images are often inaccurate/misleading.

Unless there is something wrong on the edges, I would have no problem if they called that a 65. The coloring looks quite natural to me (I realize it is a picture) and pleasing. I guess that I just don't get it.

I don't get it either. And apparently the under-bidder in the auction felt the same way, as we bid it up way over typical MS63RB money.:rolling:

I think it should have gone 64RB by any standard. The reverse is hammered, you don't see that often on these, every line and every kernal. The obv has a typ strike/ soft die, but is soooo clean it really seperates itself from the crowd.

Great coin Mark, and again, you have proven that quality and eye appeal are more important than any plastic holder or price guide.

that's one fine coin, mark! i really think i'd re-submit that. the graders were obviously very fatigued when they graded it! that's worthy of at least a 64!

That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the pics. And based on that, some might think the coin had slight wear. That said, it would not be the first AU58 that I have seen slabbed as a 63 either.

But Mark I would trust your judgement over that given on the slab. And you obviously think the coin is MS. Do you think they graded it 63 because of a weak strike ?

Look at the lettering GDJMSP, full and sharp, even the " O" in one, the strike is pounded, it's a very worn die. I'm not sure how that affects grade myself.......
