The first proof Baldy half was in the 3 pc. set I got as a gift for someone. When I saw that it was "milky" around the rim (first pic) I figured no sweat I would just get another one and keep this one as they are cheap. So I ordered another from the mint. Look at this beauty. What is going on there that they send out proof coins that look like this ??(next 2 pics). Is this common or am I just that lucky(sic)?I'm going to return one of them and try again. Hoping that the 3rd time is a charm. John
the break in luster on the face of the eagle, i see ALOT! i dont bother to waste time sending them back, as i belive it is common. I see alot of folks complaining about it, so i know its not just me. The milky 'spotting' around the rim is see at times as well. maybe not as bad, but its tough to tell degree of milkyness lol. on the middle picture.. is that actual damage to the '0' ?
Yes. The 2nd "0" in the year looks like the planchet was damaged prior to minting.I have to go to work now but I'll try and get a closer pic later. Thanks, John
Mint Quality Control I ordered the 2007 Legacy Set from the mint last year and when it arrived it had two Jamestown coins and no Littlerock coin. I called the mint and they told me that they were sold out of the sets and the Littlerock coin, so all they could do was to refund my money. If they can screw up something as obvious as this, I don't have a lot of confidence in their ability to detect scratches and nicks.
And to think, when I pull proofs out of circulation, I thought it was the coin counting equipment causing the damage. Maybe they just came that way. LOL
it's a real shame to see these coins making it out of the mint in that condition.the quality control is atrocious! the employees should have to sit through one of the shows that is broadcasted on the history channel and the travel channel. see what they think of the show. see if they actually are doing what the film says they are doing to ensure a quality product. it is really disappointing to see poor examples showing up in mailboxes. i'm thru ranting! steve
At least their billing department has pretty much the same trouble. It seems the U.S. Mint's billing department forgets to charge for some orders every once and awhile and I love FREE stuff from the U.S. Mint. :smile
This is as close as I can get. If you look inside of the zero you can see that the damage was pre striking. Should I keep it ? I think it's pretty cool. John
Well if you like it keep it. Me personally in 20 years of buying from the mint I have returned exactly one coin which came out of the holder. So I can not complain.
It's a strike through error. Struck through a piece of threadlike lint. Probably from a workmans wiping rag.
Time to outsource to other countries where quality mint products are still made. That's even worse than some of the proof coins that are struck back in 1960s.
