Hi All, I finally picked one of these up, what do you think in terms of grade, and do the carbon spots on the obverse detract from its overall look in your opinion? Thanks!
I don't think the spots on the obverse are ordinary carbon spots - perhaps none of them are. It looks like someone sneezed or coughed over the coin. That said, I'd say the coin grade 63/64. And yes I find the spots detracting.
That is pretty darn cool. On the first picture I was thinking my glasses need adjustment. The spots might be quite distracting... but the point is, you liked the coin and wanted to add it to your collection. However, on the spots near Lincolns nose, on his face and jacket, I see something that really bothers me. I have seen these nearly perfect round bullseye spots on other coins, and I know that it can be trouble for the coin. In my experience I have seen this type of spot grow and cause damage to that coin and also transfer the spot to other coins. I do not know how to stop it from growing. I have dabbed a little rubbing alcohol on the spot with a cotton swab and it seems to delay the growth. With that said, just keep it away from other coins, perhaps in a flip all its own, and enjoy it. When is science going to come up with something that will protect coins in their original state so do not have to worry about them becoming victims of the elements? jeankay
Thanks for the comments. I didn't even think about it but jeankay you're right, I'd hate it if those spots grew. But, I don't want to touch the thing either so maybe I'll just wait and see what happens. It's actually in a 2x2 now so I was just planning on leaving it there.
Coin 'disease' Hi AgCollector Here is a pic of coins from a roll I purchased. Unfortunately for me nearly the entire bu roll was 'infected' with whatever this is. This is only one of the cruddy things I have seen in searching. Whenever I encounter a coin in a hoarde of coins that has the 'crud', the coins touching it always have the same disease in some degree. The coin I am posting is in a roll I turned in at the bank. I did not keep any of the entire roll. jeankay
oops, sorry AgCollector. Just before you hit the hay, think about that perfect Morgan dollar that you might get for $1.00 from someone. This is the worse coin from the lot. I was calling it 'Penny Pox' for awhile. It does have a certain mystique to it... a sort of odd doubling going on. When the fascination ended, so did the coin. 'Out out out darn spot!' to paraphrase a famous line. I wonder if a coating of clear nail polish would stop it in its tracks? No? I would want to try almost anything to get it to stop what it is doing, but I don't have the right answers. If it makes you feel better, I probably would have purchased it if I had seen it first. jeankay
