Hello Everyone! Can someone take a look at this 1861 Confederate half dollar and let me know if this is a possible restrike?
Your photos are little blurry but the surfaces have cast like bumps in them. If you can take better photos It'll be easier to determine if it's original or a copy.
It is modern copy that lacks the subtleties of the real thing. I have a Confederate Restrike that was made with the original reverse die on the ground down reverse of an genuine 1861-O half dollar. I will post that piece tomorrow. There are only four examples of the real thing, and all of them are accounted for.
What does it weigh? Even the restrikes are very rare. It looks very new. Most likely a replica/copy. People don't just happen to get a coin worth a great deal of money by accident.
Notice that all the stars near the edge are not pointed and are round and dull, unlike the picture of a real one posted by Larry. It is most likely fake.
I have decided to past a history of the Confederate Half Dollar in the U.S. Coins section. Here is an example of the Scott Restrike.
That whole coin is wrong. A quick glance at it and it approximately looks correct. But when you start looking at the details, then nothing is correct from the stars, to the flow lines of the dress, to the rim dentils that are ghosted, etc etc.
