best way to bury silver coins

Can anyone give me advice on how I might bury silver coins without damaging them? I understand you shouldn't put them in PVC pipe. Any other tips on how to do this and keep moisture out would be appreciated.

My Grandmother always told me not to put all my eggs in one basket/safe.

 

I would say. THICK GLASS JAR. Or a very HEAVY DUTY plastic storage box. You could also try a Plano Tackle box. ( The type used for Fishing Lures ) Toss a few silica packs in it Duct tape the seems and dig a hole.

 

Any silver I bury will go in a coffin ---- along with me.

 

1. Put the coins in a heavy (non-PVC) plastic bag, with plenty of silica gel (no direct contact).
2. Set up your shop vac for suction.
3. Suck all the air you can out of the plastic bag.
4. Remove the vacuum hose and seal up the opening.
5. Put the bag(s) in a hard plastic container.
6. Bury the container.

Be very careful not to lose track of the gravesite!

 

I take it that these are junk an not numismatic

 

I would love to dig up a box of old coins. That would really out do my all time find.

No I'm NOT serious but I'm also not burying silver in the back yard. I DO intend to be buried with one coin when the time comes. An 1866 Two Cent Piece that my dad gave me

Hopefully I will have sold all my coins when "my time" comes. What isn't will go to my wife.

Im thinking... silver is no good when you're dead. Unless you believe in the same things that ancient cultures (such as the Egyptians did - to be buried with your stuff so you'll have things in the after life).

I can't think of any circumstance where burrying silver coins is a good way to protect them.

 

When my Grandfather buried it originally in 1939 it wasn't selfish. It was one of the many prudent things he did in his lifetime. It isn'st selfish now. You don't know my circumstances so don't judge me. Thanks to a few that provided worthwhile answers.

 

Rather than burying it out in the open and risking the uncertainty of weather and someone else finding it , why not consider a floor safe in the basement or the crawlspace of the house? Just a thought.

 

I buried several cull silver and other misc coins in my backyard. I put them in pill boxes from the local CVS but not to preserve them but to locate them. I use them to practice with my metal detector.

Carl I'm sure you have a reason to do this but I agree that there may be a better place, away from the elements to bury them.

 

I didn't judge you. I just said it's a bad idea. And it is. But they are your coins, so do what you want.

 

I can think of a number of reasons why some one might want to bury some goodies away. One being your town is full of drug addicts or worse you cant trust some one close to home or for maybe some reason like. Or there is a chance of a fire in your house. Maybe A person wants to just do what there grand parents did so a chald or grand child can one day unearth them. Sorta like passing the torch in a way. I can't knock the guy for doing his own thing. Although. I would really suggest useing care as to where you bury them. You dont want the wrong person to dig them up or have something built over them, like a shed or another house or even a swimming pool or somethign like that.

 

Do Forget About the Frost Line

If you intend on burying your treasure and you want to preserve them, yes make sure you seal them water tight. Also do forget to bury at least three feet down. This will make it a lot of work and hopefully deter you from digging them up on a whim, but mostly it will protect them from climate changes from year to year.

Throw a "piece of eight" in there for the pirate effect, ha ha.
