I have been trying to figure out this 2004-P keelboat nickel for awhile now. Take a look at the photo on the very tip of Jefferson's chin. You will notice a "step" there. I could have sworn I saw other pictures of this before at auctions, but the auction made no mention of his chin. So I am not sure if this is an error or what. What do you think?
Is there a better photo you can post? Is the defect a raised area or incused (sunk in) ... There are quite a lot of things it could be ( die gouge, chip , crack, post mint damage... etc ) but with out better photos we're all just spinning our wheels and going nowhere...
The area in question is incused, it is a very smooth and gradual sunk in area. Untill I get a scanner this is the best I can give for pics.
I believe I have a P Keelboat cud error & would love an expert opinion. (I haven't fiqured out how to post a picture)
It is always best to post photos of both sides of the coin, Then crop out everything but the coin before posting. I am not sure but it could be this. http://coinauctionshelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12293 @paddyman98 @JCro57 @Fred Weinberg
Thanks - that's possible. Here's a better angle. It looks like the defect is higher & the letters dont look smashed, just very faint.
Better photos of the opposite side of the area in question would help. I believe that @Oldhoopster could have this right. Thing is you need to take photos of the area in question both sides in the same perspective.
I'll work on better pics - the obverse is definitely smashed but the reverse has that elipse. It is raised, shinny & it is so symmetrical...like a blank covered that spot. Thanks for your time everyone ☺
The elipse lines up with the word trust on the obverse - you can see in the scan that the rim is intact...I'll work on it & Thanks again.
