Greetings to all! As you can tell, I am new to the forum. I consider myself a novice collector even though I have been collecting for about 40 years. That is why I am asking for opinions on this coin. I suspect that it is a restrike, but I would like to know what others think. Please excuse me if the pictures do not post, as I am unfamiliar with posting pictures here. If they don't post, I'll keep trying until they do. Please feel free to give an opinion on this coin! Thanks, Dave..............
Welcome to the forum. It would take one heck of a provenance to convince me that you have a genuine single "R" continental. Aside from the minimal likelihood of finding one in that condition, I don't think the shape of the "7"s, especially the top, matches the genuine example pictured in the Red Book. There also seem to be some subtle differences in the pattern of rays, and the position of the "Mind your business" motto.
Thats what I noticed. I'm not familiar with any varieties that may exist other than the ones shown in the Red Book, but the sevens deffinately don't match. Guy~
Good point, this is exactly what I am looking for, other eyes pointing out subtle differences between my coin and known original strikes. Unfortunately I do not have any history on the coin other than the fact that I know where I got it. Before posting the pictures here, I did look around on the internet, and I noticed that there seems to be many varities in a number of areas of the coin. As an example, below are pictures of the date from various web sites that I visited, and they all seem to be a little different, yet all are reported to be pictures of original strikes. When was it minted, where, and so on. Please keep the opinions coming..... Dave.......... I appreciate your response and opinion.
The coin is a cast copy I believe. I've handled many real ones, as well as many more counterfeits. This one just isn't right. The sharpness of the lettering, the color, texture etc.
