I went to a coin club meeting in Joplin Mo. tonight, with my good friend @DM Coins Went well, had quite an auction, some coins sold for $3 and others sold for $1700. I didn't bid on anything, I'm broke at the moment. But I was glad to be there and can't wait to go back next month!
Sounds like a great experience. What were the demographics like? Cross section of different age ranges, or just a bunch of old guys? (I'm allowed to ask that, because I'm on the cusp of old guy territory.)
There used to be a British sitcom called "Waiting for God." I always thought that would be the perfect name for a coin club. But I guess it would be a copyright violation. All kidding aside, there is always a way to enjoy this hobby regardless of how much money you have to spend on it. Glad you had fun.
Sounds about right. Similar to my local coin shows. No younger adults (meaning people in their 20s to maybe early 30s)? That's kind of the black hole in collector demographics. People establishing their careers and starting families don't seem to have the time or money to focus on coins.
Yes, going to coin clubs are fun. I have two near me in Independence, Missouri. Do you have any coin shops down there? And how did you happen to hear about the club?
We have Gold and Silver of Joplin, Part Bullion Part numismatic coins. Thats also the one I do work for
CoinBlazer, Well done for finding a Coin Club, although, I'm not too sure about the auctions. But if you do insist on bidding, Stick nearer to the ones for $3., and not the ones at $1,700. That's probably my best advice for someone who's broke !!!
How was the event broken down? I miss having a local coin club. I did get a little frustrated as the main focus seemed to be on the auction vs on talking coins.

There are collectors who would never darken the door of a club meeting because they think it’s going to be boring, or it’s populated by a bunch of small time collectors who have nothing but State Quarter albums or penny boards. I have belonged to a number of clubs over years, and they come at all levels. I’ve usually been among the more knowledgeable collectors, but there have been one or two where I fell in the middle. When I lived in New Jersey, I almost got to go to the big club in New York City, but it never worked out. You can’t get in the front door unless another member sponsors you. It’s interesting that there was a $1,700 item in the auction. I’ve never been to a club that had an item that was that expensive. Some of the high level clubs think they are above having auctions and even frown on buying and selling. I hope that you will continue your club experience. It can add another dimension to the hobby for you, especially if they educational programs on a regular basis.
Interesting. Ours at least came with a presentation of sorts. I once gave a presentation on love tokens.
My club experience so far has been a short business meeting after the coins up for auction had been put out for review. Then it went straight to auction. It was a small club, so I wasn't surprised.
Hope you enjoyed the meeting. I look forward to coin club every month. My Club's Annual Coin Show (18 Tables, 9 different Dealers) is next month. This year for any child under 18 that comes through the door, we will give them a 2019 Sac Golden Dollar. We purchased a couple rolls from the Mint and sent them to NGC for a complimentary slabbing. The label is our club and 2019 Coin Show. NGC helped us out, because they as well want to grow the hobby with younger collectors.
CoinBlazer attended a "Coin Club Meeting". Was it about discussing interesting coins, sharing knowledge, and learning from each other ? To some extent, probably yes. It was also about auctioning, costs from around $3. to $1700. If one is critical, one could say this was a gambling den, with the $3. being the bait, to allure clients closer to the $1700. range. - Beware, all of us, that we don't get snared, however sophisticated the prizes, by that wicked demon, the gambling devil !!!
We put flyers in any business we can in the area. The local paper donates a few spots for advertising, we put the flyer on many web sites. We share with other clubs in the surrounding area. We run ads on local radio stations. Word of mouth from the members and passing out flyers to anyone they know. Here is the flyer.
