Does this 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter have a full head? Has it been cleaned?

Discussion in 'US Coins Forum' started by Mitchell Wright, Apr 11, 2019.

  1. It has really nice cartwheel luster and frosty fields, but i see hairlines under magnification. I also see a spot between the R and the T. If it had been cleaned, wouldn't this spot have been removed? Unless it occurred later?

What about the head? Is it a full head? Looks like it to me but i'm still learning. What do you think? thanks, Mitch

Just looks AU to me. Nice strike, but I'll let others opine on the FH.

AU at best and maybe a light cleaning. Need photos of both sides and the entire coin to better determine.

Nice coin. I'm with the AU folks above, and I'm not seeing a cleaning, at least not a harsh one if it has been cleaned. That spot between R and T could be from a bit of removed tarnish. I'd be proud to own it.

    Yes, and yes.

    Still a nice coin, though.

Prefer the no star Type 1. The head seems full.
As for cleaned, I am not seeing the luster (not saying it's not there),
but the coin has a slightly grainy appearance and I would guess the surfaces
are not original. Still a great coin.

IMO I think this is a beautiful coin for it's longevity, I also think it was possibly dipped in silver jewlery cleaner, no harsh scratches at all. very light wear, AU 60

No opinion on the grade or cleaning, but that sure is a pretty sucker. Just saying.

Most 1917-P Type I Standing Liberty Quarters have full heads. That throws a lot of new collectors off because they think that whole set should look that way. It can't.

Here is an MS-65. Compare the luster with your coin. I'm not saying that you should be buying something like this, but it does give an idea as to what mint surfaces look like. Learning to spot original mint surfaces is one of the cornerstones to learning how to grade coins.

So, @johnmilton , I was hoping you would comment on this one... but I'm not sure if you are saying "circulated" or "cleaned" or both.

Yes, AU sharpness, lightly cleaned. The first set of photos make it look worse than the second set. I hope that it looks more like the second set in person.

The spot that you cited did not "lift" when the coin was cleaned. That might account for why the piece was cleaned in the first place.

  21. Thanks for all of your comments! Great stuff!

@johnmilton that’s a nice example. The hair detail in yours is more defined, as is the breast. Thanks for your help. Mitch
