Weekly Silver Post Starting 03-13-2008 I am starting a new thread because my kids and I have decided to get 4 boxes of Kennedy Half dollar coins each week to search for 90% and 40% silver coins and anything else that catches our fancy. Currently, 90% Kennedy silver halves (1964s) are paying 10x face and 40% (1965-1969) Kennedy silver halves are paying somewhere between 3-5x face depending on your local dealer and your quantity. Anyway, here is the haul from the first 4 boxes: 18 - 90% (1964) one 1952 Franklin 15 - 40% (1965-1969) 1 - 2003-D not silver just rare in circulation Wish us luck!! :mouth:
If you can get 1964 Kennedy Halves and Franklin Halves for 10 times face, I think you are quite well. They currently melt for more than 14 times face value now. I am not really a collector of 40% silver Kennedy's(though I do have some), but they currently melt for over 5 times face value.
That is just what my local guy pays for small quantities. I was just low-balling the profit margin to take into account the fluxuating price of silver. I am going wait until the price climbs and I have a large supply before I sell them. I can wait for 14x face.
Week 3-21-2008 Not too impressive after last weeks finds but here goes anyway. In 4 boxes of halves we found a total of: 1-1951-S Franklin 90% 1-1954-D Franklin 90% 1-2002-P 1-2006-D 1-1987-D And one 1971 with a completely silver edge. No copper showing at all. Fooled me. Anyway, better luck next week.
Thanks Phoenix but it feels kind of skimpy after last week and after reading the post about the guy who hit the bank right after someone brought in a toolbox full of silver halves, I feel down right cheated this week. :headbang:
Actually, that looks like a pretty good haul, way better than I have seen others detail here these days.....
03-28-2008 This week the silver was a bit thin. I ending up keeping only six coins out of $2000 worth searched. I found the following: 40% Silvers 1-1967-P 1-1968-D Just rare in circulation 1-2004-D 1-2004-P 1-2005-D 1-2007-D I'm probably losing more money in shorted rolls than I am making in silver finds at this point. I found a penny and a dime in two rolls and other rolls had only 19 coins. I lost about $3 total. Just the risk you take I guess.
Week ending 04-04-2008 I got a little something for my trouble this week. Me and the kids managed to find the following loot: SILVER 2-1964-D 90% 1-1966 40% 3-1967 40% 2-1969-D 40% RARE IN CIRCULATION 1-1992-S 1-2005-D 1-2006-D OUT OF $2000 WE KEPT ABOUT $5.50 FACE VALUE. THERE IS ALWAYS NEXT WEEK I GUESS. :hail:
Week ending 04/11/2008 I have to call this a really, really good week. One of the 4 boxes contained almost everything I found. Check this list out: 90% Silvers 6-1964 24-1964-D 11-Franklins 8-Walkers 40% Silvers 4-1965 6-1966 21-1967 15-1968 2-1969 Rare in Circulation 1-2005-D All in all the silver is piling up after a few short weeks of searching. 49 - 90% coins this week and 48 - 40% coins.
I'm guessing all the walkers are common date and low grade but if not why not tell us a little something or post some pics, I'd be interested. Congratulations!
I didn't even look at the dates and you are right they are somewhat worn. I think the oldest one was a 1934 but most others were early 40's. I dig them out for melt value pretty much. I do look at the dates and conditions before I sell them but I haven't had time to check all of these out. I'll list the dates and the mint marks later tonight but pictures may be a while yet.
Walkers 1-1935 2-1937 2-1941 2-1942 1-1946 All Plains ranging from VG-8 to F-12 Franklins 2-1952-D & 1-P 1-1953-D 1-1959-D 1-1961-D 1-1962-D 5-1963-D Pretty much melt value as usual.
Still you got a pretty good range. Since you've doing this with your kids you could maybe try to build a set of Franklins out of the coins you find, I guess they'd get a kick out of it. Thanks for answering!
No problem mate! My three sons already have Franklin sets and Walker sets that were mostly handed down from their grandfather and his father. When I find something that is in really good condition, I will swap it out with one of the coins in their books but that rarely happens with circulated coins. Just waiting for next Wednesday when my next 4 boxes arrive. Wa-Who!
Moen1305 - did you have to order these in advance from the bank? If so did you just call them up or stop in and tell them you wanted to buy 4 boxes a week?
Moen - you got me pumped up to find more silver. Over the past year and a half, I have found around 40 90% halves and 40 40% halves. I gave up a few months ago when I went on a month or two dry spell. Today I went down to my bank and ordered two $500 boxes. Should be in next Thursday. I will keep you posted.
I just talked with the teller at my bank and told them to order 4 boxes a week until I told them to stop. If I were out of town one week, they'd just hold them until the following week or give them to some other guy. They order coins every week so it is no skin off of their nose if they order a couple of extra boxes for me.
