What is This Coin?

    I think this is from china but I can't read Chinese or whatever language is written on it and I even used google to find one like this but didn't find anything. I found it in a bag that belongs to my Mom and she got it from a guy who went to foreign countrys.

    Countries - Plural

    The date for your coin is year 50 in the reign of the Shouwa Emperor (Emperor Hirohito). So the date would be 1975.

    To read: 日 本 国 = Nihon koku ~meaning literally Japan, country.
    昭和= Shouwa. 五十年 gojuu-nen= 50th Year. 五円 go-en= 5 yen

    These later years were minted in very large numbers, so are not rare or valuable, but the 5 yen is considered a lucky coin.

    The design on the reverse represents their cornerstone industries. The rice stalks represent agriculture, those horizontal lines below are a depiction of water, which represents fisheries. Less noticeable is the "gear" around the hole. That represents manufacturing.
