I have collected American coins for many years. Recently I obtained this silver coin that I’ve been unable to identify. A little help would be greatly appreciated. I apologize in advance if the orientation is not correct.

I am not sure exactly what that may be, but others will chime in I'm sure. I have seen similar coins from the delhi sultanate but am not expert.

Thank you for taking time to respond. I changed the title to include wider possibilities. Just viewed some 18th century rupees that looked similar.

It looks Arabic to me. It's quite a few years old. I'm trying to find a date but the damage may have obliterated it.

Weighs 5.4 grams (quite thin), is 26mm at the widest and about 24mm at the narrowest as it is out of round.

Looks to be from one of the Indian Princely States. There is a website for identification of these, as I have used it before. Will try to locate it for you, hopefully soon. The left photo will be the key to identifying it, as there are elements for identifying there that relate to a specific princely state.

Thank you, Bayern. I looked through about 600 images on Numista last night but saw no matches. Much of the trouble comes from the rather poor surface of the coin- I was unable to get a precise date, which I know would lead me to more easily identifying it.

Welcome :cat: Have you also tried posting the pics, dimensions, on Numista? There are several members there that are very knowledgeable on these coins. (Parimal is one person there that I recall, but there are several others that also could help you in identification). Probably if you post there and headline as “Help needed in identifying probable Indian Princely States coin” you will catch the attention faster of someone who can help.
I will continue looking for the site I referenced earlier, I cannot find it in my bookmarks, so will keep looking.

Looks similar to a lot of issues from Iran. It is not too clear but it looks like it may have a date of AH1123 which would translate to around 1710AD.

1FE6954E-3B08-409E-AF45-01B1C8F07054.jpeg Muzyck, I think you have hit it. This appears to be a Persian Safavid from the reign of Sultan Husayn (1694-1722). Haven’t found an exact match, but tantalizingly close- also the size and weight match up. Here’s a similar example...

    Arabic.
I called it in post #4.
Between the damage and the blur, the date is very difficult to read.

I see the 11, but you can't make out whether it's 2s or 3s or 1 of each, but anything from 1122 to 1133 will still fit in that range.

Hard to find an exact match on these. The Standard Catalog doesn't have many plate coins and there are widely varying stylistic variations based on the mint. I am thinking yours may have been minted at Isfahan although I don't see a clear match.

The denomination of your coin is called an Abbassi.
    The mint is Mashhad.

This is very helpful. From what I have read, the 5.4 gram Abbasi came about in 1717, so this coin would date to between that year and 1736 when the Safavid dynasty ended. This lines up with the date range Hookman and Muzyck had estimated.
Many thanks for the assistance offered. It’s a fascinating history lesson.

Glad to hear you are learning more about your coin, getting everything pinned down to a more exact identification :cat:
