At least this was certified by NGC. Nice to have a shipwreck coin.

I wanted to ask him about the size. The label states that the coin is a Real. And that would make it silver dollar sized and would also be known as a piece of eight. One fourth of a piece of eight is also known as two bits. These days commonly called a quarter..... The Real was the foundation of our nations coin system.

Since this is a Real (dollar) it would be eight pieces of eight.

I believe you got this wrong. It doesn’t have the size or weight of a silver dollar. A 2 reales coin is about the size of a US quarter. An 8 reales coin was called “piece of eight” and was the equivalent to a silver dollar.

Ahh!!!! You are absolutely correct. My apologies for getting a bit crossed up on that one.

1 doubloon (Doblón) = 2 pieces of eight
8 Reales (Royals) = 1 piece of eight
1 Real (Royal) = 0.125 piece of eight

Escudos and Doubloons were made of gold, Reales were made of 90% silver.

It's about the size of a nickel. It's only 1 real, not eight.

That depends on how many reals it is, condition, slabbed and where you buy it.

Real is 1/8 of a Ocho Reales. 12-1/2 cents - one bit.
