This is CRAZY! I just placed an order for the Madison FS coin and the price was $529! I just canceled it of course, but I wanted to see if the same thing happened when I went to purchase the 2007 4 coin UNC AGE set. It was listed on the Mint site for $1599, but when I went to place the order, the price corrected itself on the check-out page for $1999. I called the Mint about this and they said that all these glitches are part of their computer problems they are having with the new system. This happened several weeks ago and the mint has since changed the price on their web page.

What suprises me most is that they are still charging $529 for the Madison and its not correcting itself when you place the order. So either....1. this is a great deal, jump on it while you can 2. All of us that just ordered the Monroes are getting screwed.

No, it is legit. You can still order the Madison Spouse coins for $529.95, even though the Monroe are much higher.

It does cost a few bucks to manufacture the coins, and for overhead.

Today may be the last day that you can buy the Dolley Madison First Spouse Gold coins at $529.95, as gold is at $996 and change an ounce as I write this. The mint may stop selling them to reprice them. And if they do, it will probably be to the price of the Elizabeth Monroe gold proof coin. Better order them now, if you haven't yet, and you still want them!

Aside from the school of thought that says, If you like a coin - collect it, if you don't like a coin - don't collect it.... there is a tiny piece of me that also wants to collect these pieces for their supposed "numismatic" value down the road.

Now we all don't know what the "numismatic" value of these coins will be 10, 20, 30 years down the road.... the only value that is otherwise guareenteed appears to be the melt value. Someone made an interesting comment on another thread that stated that there may not be any numismatic value to these coins other than the melt value itself. This, of course is just speculation, but is really disturbing to me because I really like these coins and do collect them. It would be a tremendous goal to collect all these coins and be able to pass them down to your children (who will then most likely cash them in anyway for face value!:headbang: :D LOL!) But it would almost (an I'm putting in there "almost") be a waste of my time and money collecting these when I could be spending the thousands of dollars a year on other coins with a greater numismatic value that will appreciate over the years. This same philiosophy can be said about almost anything collectable or with stocks and bonds. My biggest fear is that I end up spending all this money on them primarily because the value of gold is driving up the price/value, then over the years the gold value falls and there is no numismatic value at all.

Anyway, I'm feeling like that little kid who made a mistake and now wants his parents to say its ok in order for the kid to feel better. LOL! Don't mind me... I'm just rambling... this is what happens when you have a few hours of downtime while working. I know there are a lot of other collectors out there that feel the same way as I do and its just nice to hear that I'm not alone. Thanks. :)
