Goodbye US Currency...Hello Amero Dollar

If and when our currency tanks and the Amero Dollar takes it's place, what will happen to all the modern coins (with little intrinsic value) and old, truely numismatic coins? Will their values (numismatically) be history as well?
Will all the coins we have just turn into little fragments of American history and the Red Books be a thing of the past?

The only coins I could see worth keeping would be Gold and Silver.

I'de like some of your expert opinions because in collecting State Quarters, and coins such as those with little or no intrinsic value, I'm afraid it could be truely a waste of time.

My advice is don't worry about it. There is no serious movement in support of the Amero dollar and I can't imagine congress signing on.

 

If for some reason the US DOLLAR FINALLY ROLLED OVER AND DIED> To be replaced by say an AMERO Dollar. I do not think that the correct money in circ would not be any good any longer, It would just be slowly fazed out. Say over a 10 or 20 year span. After that long you would only see random ( MODERN ) coins in your packet. As for paper notes. Those would be removed faster from circulation. History shows us that. Even if there was a sudden change to are moneys. There would be no differance in face value. It would crash the Economy to all of a sudden say your old US money is worth less then before, (NOT WORTHLESS) but actaully less value. Gold and Silver have always been worth collecting. I dont not beleive that will ever change. As far as coin collecting go. It will be bigger and better then ever. If you ask me it will just make older coins worth more as well as what we use today as modern coinage.

There will be a day with in the next 200 years when a person will walk into a future coin shop and pay $10,000 Amero GanipGanops for a US Two Dallor bill and a 1979 AU Nickel. lol Most likly selling as pre oil war money. lol Basicaly Who cares I will be dead and so want every one I know. Let the future coin collectors worry about it. lol I also wwant to say again THERE IS NOT GOING TO BE ANY CHANGE TO THE US DOLLAR ANYTIME SOON or even later. Infact I dont see any reason to change to the AMERO and i do not think Congress does either. I think the only way for that to happen would be if there was a trans Atlantic railroad system where people could travel from the US to the UK in under a 2 hours trip and mass's of people worked across the globe on the daily going back and forth like they do now to take a train down town to work.

 

Collecting anything has very little to do with the object's inherent monetary value. People collect all sorts of things. Coins happen to have a face value, and sometimes have a significant melt value, but it is frequently completely disconnected from the numismatic value. Nobody spends seated liberty dollars on groceries or melts them for the silver. Nothing you describe is likely to have much of an impact on collector's habits.

 

Why debate or worry about something that just plain ain't gonna happen? The Amero is a fantasy currency dreamed up by some college professor as a counterpart to the Euro.

While actual Amero "coins" exist they are fantasy pieces minted and sold by Designs Computed. I put the Amero in the same category as black helicopters. Conspiracy theorists may disagree but they are entitled to their opinions.

 

If a coins melt value is MUCH higher then its collectable value. Then you will see plenty of them NO MATTER what the are being melted.

isnt the Amero dollar supposed to be for all of North America?
I mean, that would surely not work, with Mexico being in the picture - since they are a poor country.

at this point in the economy we could combine Canadian and American currency, since its pretty much equal, but certainly not all of North America.
I doubt anything of the sort would happen.

Interestingly, the origin of the whole thing is attributed to a CoinTalk regular, Daniel Carr (DJCoins) who created a series of hypothetical Amero currency. However, there doesn't seem to be any serious effort to adopt the Amero and it seems to be mainly the stuff of conspiracy theorists including a talk radio host who claimed that the coins were produced secretly by the US Treasury. It would be great to hear Dan's side of the story.

The Euro originally replaced 12 currencies, and has since replaced others. In general the changeover had no effect on the numismatic value of the old coins from those countries, although as exchange privileges phased out their monetary/face values tanked.

In the 1 in several million chance of your scenario occurring, I'd wager that the Euro conversion would be replicated.

Pre Euro coinage still sells doesn't it?

I don't actively collect it nor do I live in Europe but I sincerely doubt the hobby would tank.

 

Is it bad if I like the Amero designs more than the current US Mint coinage? lol!

 

Not as well as euro coins, but yes, of course many collectors are interested in older pieces too.

Take it this way, Americans still have issues when it comes to removing cents and mints trying to encourage people to use dollar coins. It's just impossible to get rid of the US dollar without people screaming and threatening lawsuits.

The original question about old and truly numismatic pieces probably has nothing to do with melt value.
